306 gti Clutch replacement

Hi guys, just about to replace my clutch on my new gti-6. Im a bit of a main-service-dealer person but was wondering if the clutch was the sort of thing that can be done via Midas-type operators with no problems, or if i should stick to the specialists for this one. (Regan motors is on the other side of town for me). Also, has anyone tried the Valeu PG04 kit - is it any good?

It's a very tricky and labourious job. Not much room to work in there. I' be taking it to a Pug specialist of some kind, not necessarily a dealer. Hopefully some Melbournians can recommend somewhere.

If the Midas/wherver place hs done a GTi6 before then, great, if not, I really wouldn't bother...

By the way - is there anywhere in Melbourne apart from Regan Motors that do 'independent' servicing? Most people i have talked to are a bit suspicious of the City Peugeot mob & say Regans are the only 'independent' type left even though they are a proper dealer. Any feedback here would be great

you went to the trouble of making a post, but couldnt even tell him a mechanic to visit. hardly helpful.

try autoparis in box hill. independant, modern pug specialists with labour thats a bit cheaper than regans (although not all that cheap)

Well I'm not from Melbourne, matey, so I can't help with a mechanic down there! I do, however, know there's a decent length thread on it somewhere on AF... I could be super helpful and find the thread... but I was feeling a bit half arsed... obviously

you could also try spencer st autos (they used to own city pug b4 bayford bought it out)

again, not all that cheap, but they know what they're doing.

While the Gearbox is out, make sure you replace the clutch fork lift bushes, they cost less than ten bucks. The bushes tend to wear and bind up causing the clutch to feel really heavy. You will be surprised at the result, a clutch as light as a feather. I believe this job to be a bit tricky as the thrust bearing comes as part of the pressure plate. The clutch fork needs to be 'scooped' out, then back in. A bit of persistance, holding your tongue in the right position plus the occasional swear word and the job is done. Also check the condition of the clutch cable.

Whilst i have not dealt with them on a technical level yet! They seem very professional and my dad also dealt with them for years, until he turned to the dark side.

I used Alpine Affaire also for our 306 Cab, new clutch and drive shaft.
Good blokes to deal with.

There's also Universe Motors in Swan St, Richmond. Not necessarily cheap, but they do know pugs. I'd preference Auto Paris, but Universe would be ok if it's closer to you.
