    Default 504 Starter Motor

    Hi all,

I've noticed on a couple of occasions now that the starter motor seems to spin but not engage on the flywheel ... when I try again it will start the motor no worries. Seems some probelm developing. I thought I would ask to try to pre-empt a bigger problem so I won't get stranded anywhere.

Is it a starter motor problem ... solenoid .... or low battery charge?

sounds like the soleniod is not throwing properly

is it a du sillier starter ?

if so it may be worthwhile trying to source a bosch one as they are much cheaper to do and parts can be found anywhere

on that note though i have a bosch in the 604 that is doing exactly the same as yours and it was rebuilt by the auto spark but i haven't had time to take it back to them

as far as i am concerned they can take it out and fix it and put it back as it isn't right sans charge as soon as i get some time to do so

I'll have a look when the sun is out and it's a bit warmer? Cold here now.

Shocking ain't it when you pay to get something done and it still don't work!!

Come to think of it I'll check on my spare 504 as well ... I knew I had that sitting there for something.

Its more likely the Bendix clutch on the drive gear about to fail and the same advice is relevant except I prefer a 505 starter with new brushes and bushes fitted. Almost every 504 Ducellior starter I have had has ended up with Bendix failure but still has done good service up to then,

Is the early 505 with XN motor fitted with Bosch or Ducellier starter motor?

I presume from what you are saying is that it is a Bosch and will slot straight into the 504?

They could be Ducellior or Paris Rone but they are nearly identical to each other but have not seen a Bosch. They do fit straight on to a 504 though and I think work better than the 504 Bosch unit. They crank over faster and seem to handle hot starts better. They have a different design Commutator with Triangle shape brushes and are physicaly shorter than a 504 unit.

Both my 504's have Bosch stamped on the solenoid. I cannot see any markings on the starter motor itself. I assume from that they are both Bosch units?

I will pull one out and get it serviced etc and should be OK from there.

bosch ones are cheap and easy to get done

parts are easy to come by

should cost you around $120 all up to get it overhauled
