205 gti cambelt

Hi,

How often should you change the cambelt on a 1988 205 gti 1.9 engine.
Mine has done 107,000 miles and was last changed at 60,000 miles.
Is this motor an interferance or non-interferance engine if the cambelt breaks ?

What does the manual say about replacement intervals?

A mechanic relative in Manchester, England regularly changes belts on his client's cars once a year. His reasoning is that because the weather conditions are cold (often freezing) then the belts can get brittle and fail.
Its a much cheaper option than taking the head off and replacing valves.

Recently I replaced the belt on my GTI 505 - The old belt was pretty poor and had been on there for 8 years which is about 150,000Ks. In future I'm not going past 50,000Ks before replacement.

I think Id better be safe and change it before things go all pear shaped.
Now i need to fine a hayes manual . . .anyone got one online I can buy ,beg or borrow ? ? ?
