    Default 306 Xt

About a year ago I purchased a 1997 Peugeot 306 XT 1.8I alloys, sunroof, tint, for about $11,500 for about a two months I was happy, but ever since I have been having one problem after another.

About a few weeks ago my girlfriend advised that the temperature gauge started to creep up. I had a look and could not find anything wrong and thought, must be the radiator, so I flushed and replaced the coolant.

A few days went by and the problem seem to get worse with the temperature rising more and the fans working their heart out to keep the engine cool. I took the car into a local mechanic who specialises in European cars and was advised that it was most likely the head gasket and the car is running only on two cylinders with a liter of coffee for oil (oil & water mix)

My first thought ……f$#%….C$%…car..I asked the mechanic how much it cost and he advised about $1500 - $2500 not including the labour which would be 5 or 6 hours, the guy recommended that I might be better off to get a reconditioned engine but I might end up with the same problem. I asked him to try and if out the price for a recon engine and I haven’t heard from him since.

Please could someone give me some advice on cost and where to go to get a head gasket fixed in Melbourne at a reasonable price? Or where I could get a recon engine with installation at reasonable price.

Where you wearing a saddle when you drove into that workshop.....

...coz those guys were really trying to take you for a ride?

$1500 incl. Labour at most. Definitely look around. Head gasket is about $150, head facing - $50, 16V head service - $300.

Hi, It could be a head gasket or as simple as the thermostat not functioning. I had the same problem a few years ago and replaced the themostat and everything was fine, cost about $50.00 for the part. It is easy to get to and a DIY job for sure. I would do this first before shelling out on a head gasket, unless you are sure it has gone, ie water in the oil or the other way round. And I would probably go to a couple of pug specialists for quotes before accepting $2,000.00 plus labour.
