    Icon7 505 Wheelbase Problems

Whilst driving my 505 the other day, I went around a fairly tight L.H. corner and the F.R. tyre scraped on the guard. After measuring the wheelbase I found the left side was 2740mm and the right was 2766mm, the Haynes manual says it should be 2743mm. There is no obvious damage to any of the front suspension and it feels fairly tight.

I replaced both front dampers when I bought the car last year. After I had done the F.R. strut I reinstalled it into the car. At this point it occurred to me that I hadn't noted in which direction the rebound limiter was pointing before removal. I marked the F.L. one before removal and reinstalled it as it was. The Haynes manual says that the rebound limiters should be aligned parallel with the vehicle centre line and therefore the F.L. is pointing in the wrong direction but the wheel base is close to correct on that side.

Does the alignment of the rebound limiter have any bearing on the castor of the strut? As you can see from the photos there's an obvious difference between left and right wheels in relation to the guards. What else could be causing the wheelbase to be out? It doesn't scrape around tight R.H. corners.

    Cheers,

    Matt.

have you checked your lower control arms are both straight ?

if it has hit a gutter in the past you may find one slightly bent

Or have you (or someone) put a 504 caster bar in there?

That will make a difference, I once accidentally put a 505 bar in mine, it made the wheel scrape the front floor.

    Thanks fellas,

Both lower control arms look good and I didn't see any castor bars there either. I guess what I am trying to find out is if you rotate the strut which will rotate the rebound limiter as it is attached to the strut and gives us an idication as to which way the strut is oriented, does the orientation of the strut affect it's castor? I couldn't find any references to this in either the Haynes or the factory mauals except to say which way to have it aligned.

    Cheers,

    Matt.

That's OK Mate, always willing to offer assistance where possible.
It's a good conundrum though and I am glad it's you and not me. Is it looking like it'll be a simple as a suspension arm of one description or the other?

Matt, the caster bars are the arms that go forward, with the big rubbers in the mount on the chassis...

Carefully measure them... from memory the 505 ones have an extra bit in the middle... have you still got a 504 strut in the shed?

    Matt
The rotation of the strut top usually affects the camber of a macpherson strut the centre of the plate being offset, to change by small amount the strut top is rotated to the most appropriate position.

Thanks for your replies. I'll have a good look at the front end of it during the week. So far I've just stuck my head in there and had a bit of a look for the obvious. I don't have any 504 castor bars left but I have some 505 ones in case one on the car is bent. It used to belong to a couple of very knowlegeable blokes so I can't see that they would have stuffed up the castor bars.

    Cheers,

    Matt.

    Trust me, it's easy!

I compared two side by side, but with just a little parallax error I got it wrong...
