i wouldnt worry about blowing the standard speakers, the 4x50w will be 16 or 17wrms, if you must, pull out the factory speakers and check their rating on the back.

Don't bother checking anything. That head unit will be fine. The only thing affecting your stock speakers will be age, bad weather, dust and how hard you crank the volume, the closer to distortion the more damage you do to them... enjoy! then when the speakers sound shity replace them. - Chris

I'd say, that given you are on a budget I would replace the head unit with a reasonably decent low priced one like the one you have chosen, as a drop-in replacement for the current one. I'd leave the stock speakers in - they were fitted as a reasonable compromise between low cost and fitting reasonably well with the limitations of the car acoustics. I would upgrade the stock speakers only if you were willing to spend quite a lot more money than it sounds like you are willing to spend.

As to your question of whether they would blow, you'd be surprised to learn that in a way, they may be more likely to be damaged with a low powered amplifier than a higher powered one. The output from a low powered amplifier at a given power level will be more distorted than the output from a high powered amplifier at the same power level, because the power level rating is given based on a certain distortion level. An amp can deliver more power than its rating, but it will just become more distorted. So a high power amp will not distort as much when at high output level, so it will be kinder on your speakers, given the same output level. I hope you follow my logic. Anyway, this is largely academic as this will also all depend on other factors such as your listening habits.

    Hi Matt
This is not necesserally the case, this can also vary by THD, damping factor, channel seperation and the sensetivity of the drivers... but I get your logic. - Chris
