306 XT at Eastern Creek last night

Last night at the drags there was a 306 XT that took my notice. It looked fairly standard on the outside so I went and enquired about it. It turns out that a few guys from Asquith & Johnson service department had tinkered with this car.

They told me that it had some aftermarket management which I could see from having no air flow meter, had the big manifold long manifold on it that looks like an S16 one but it wasn't the variable length one, had bigger injectors, slightly more compression and a cam just shy of 270deg duration which is fairly decent.

Now they said that it had 150hp at the wheels. Now I think they actually meant that it had 150hp. There is no way it would have had 150hp at the wheels. Thats approx 150kw at the flywheel. Thats 26kw MORE than a GTi6.

Anyway, I was to be so disappointed. From all the stuff they told me I was expecting a respectable time. Well a 16.0 @ 84mph just doesn't do it for me. Thats not much quicker than what it would be stock.

I only saw that run but the mph generally tells the story of what sort of power its making and the potential of a car. 84mph is fairly ordinary. With that mph and PERFECT traction the most they would be looking at it is a low 15.

I hope they get it together though and prove me wrong. It was definately a change though and I congratulate them for having a go.

Makes me more determined to run some decent numbers with mine.

would they be the GTi6 intake runners?

S16 had the plastic ones. GTi has some very long alloy tubes. Very similar to MI16 ones.

I would have expected better times from the light 2L. Is the exhaust stock? Tyres? Is this the 1st time the driver has been to the Drags? so many variables.

Like you I am too looking forward to your pug at the drags. 5000rpm launches... yeeehaaa.

    5000rpm !!!!

More like off the limiter at 7800!!!!

you'd probably be about right in all honesty, but I'm sure I'll do a limiter launch at some stage. Thats the moment before the box explodes. roll_lau

It looked like the GTi6 intake manifold but I thought they said it wasn't. I can't remember.

They did say though that it has the standard exhaust manifold at this stage.

Its also a guys daily driver so it still weighs a fair bit.

    Sounds interesting Darren.

Was it a 2000 model like mine? With the 2.0?

Surprising that someone would do those upgrades. Injectors? Strange really.

It might have been the one that Ustasa from Unigroup were playing with. He was talking about cams and other associated goodies.

    Was it an early 8V 306 or a 16V?

    It was a 2L 16v.

And it looked like an earler one than yours Brendan. It was quite a mix of bits and pieces come to think of it.

May have put the S16 intake manifold on an N5 2.0l engine.
