I went there when i was looking for a car years ago (i was almost 18), wanted to get more info on a mi16 in the forecourt...they told me to get my mum if i wanted any info, obviously i didn't buy my mi16 from there.

a friend of mine bought a car somewhere else that had been last serviced by them....a few things weren't how they were supposed to be.

never had a car serviced by them so cant comment.
can recommend City Peugeot in Nth Melb though and i've had good dealings with Auto Paris.

Is Universal motors the same as Richmond Peugeot? Or are they both just in Swan St.?

I am getting my 505 serviced soon, and was thinking about using Universal. So no good?

18 Months since your last service, bad very bad, I don't think the issue here is who you use, as much as how frequently eek! get that car serviced and email me for your free aussiefrog sticker!!

I believe "Universe motors" is the richmond/swan st place you guys are talking about.

I've had my car serviced there for the last 30,000km (every 5000km).....

    Where to start.....

Their service costs are low/average....but imho the "care factor" there is pretty low too

It's almost a factory setup, they have 5 or 6 mechanics there on any given day, alot of cars moving in and out of that place, most of which are quite modern and don't need much more than oil, filters and plugs, they seem more interested in churning them through than giving "decent" service....

    For example,

After a service I often find oily finger/hand prints etc on the front panels. They often leave newspaper etc on the floor, move the seats around etc (pissy i know.....but a lack of respect in my book)

I had to take the car back on many occasions over a period of 2-3months when trying to sort out an O2 sensor issue.....during which time the car was intimittently running like a bag of sh&t (of course only when i was alone in the car)......they finally found and fixed the problem when the car got to the point where it was not drivable!!!, which was the first time they hooked it up to the diagnostics (!?!?!) which told them it was the o2 sensor .....the engine warning light had only been on for a couple of months (likely poor connection somewhere they said up to that point)

    Another stunner,
I popped the bonnet of my car about a week after a service and discovered the brake resevior was open......i found the cap nearby fortunately.....anyone for spongy moisture contaminated brake fluid?

There are a few more pissy things i can mention.....but i think you get the idea.

They are friendly people there, They just don't seem to do a great job.

I don't care if it costs me more......why don't people care about the job they do and the client anymore anyway?

I use them because they are close to my work, and i don't have the time to either service the car myself (been there done that, over it) or screw around getting my car/myself to or from somewhere else....I average 30-35,000km a yr at 5000km service intervals that can be alot of screwing around.

So, yeah.....they wouldn't be first on my list......i double check everything they touch now.

I've heard some grumbles about Alpine Affair too......no first hand experience though.

    Well,

Universe Motors/Richmond Peugeot are currently replacing the rings (engine rebuild) of my 205gti 89 model. I've been servicing my car there for over a year now & Paul Stratmann (owner I think).......is a keen Pug fanatic & has been helpful (wise?) in any performance upgrades that I have suggested....money seems to burn a hole in my pocket....!!!
Their quote for the rebuild was about $500 cheaper than Regan Motors & similar to City Peugeot.
Should be picking up the car tomorrow. I'll advise of the cost & wotk done. Hopefully there will be more power too.....

Well it's done black_ey $2500 dead .....worth of rebuild by Universe Motors. They did the following : remove cylinder head & sump/pistons, clean & inspect. Overhaul head, crack/pressure test, grind & synchro seat valves, surface grind, remove & inspect piston sleeve assemblies, hone cylinders refit pistons with new rings. New big end bearings, replace cam belt, new water pump, new thermostat, fill/bleed cooling system.....16 hous Labour.
Also new.....engine oil, oil filter, sump plug seal, spark pluds, VRS gasket set, coolant, bypass hose, cam seal, crank seal, sump gasket, hose clamps, A/C belt, alternator belt....

Well......what do you think ? Reasonable price for what was done ? Am currently running in engine for 1000km until it needs oil change & tightening again.......it feels faster....i think.... I think the compression was also raised to 10:1.......

    Cosmo,

It sounds like they have done a lot of checking but not a lot of replacing re: (new parts).
Hey put it this way anyplace u go to is going to charge that & prob some more.
I would of liked new piston & liner kit if i rebuilt my engine though.
I don't want to scare u but it is most likely your pistons & liners were in tolerence and could be used or they just did not want to tell u that u will need piston and liner kit (They usually don't want to lose your buisness)and just cleaned everything up.
Any guarantees with the engine i am interested to see how u go with your engine as i have been there and done that.
The compression would have come most likely from the big chunk they sliced off the head 8-4-1 to 10-1 comp (All i can say is get ready for the optimax or simular 98 ron fuel) eek!
Is it a fact it is 10-1 or did they just guess.
What k's has the engine done

    cosmo,

Sorry mate but i forgot to mention i would change your oil at 500 k's then again at 1000 k's and also u mention retightening hope u don't mean the head as it does not need retightening.

    Take it easy

    Murat,

The engine had 114000.km on it, and it was blowing heaps of smoke....it's running well, but I'm trying not to thrash it....I think power is up......it must be with the higher comp question I think I may take it to a dyno soon to get some figures.
Oh yeah....I also got a pipercross induction kit......that's complete the package for now...

    Murat,

Also, I don't think they were guessing re the comp ratio....I'll confirm next week...&.....not sure if he was talking about tightening the head specifically, i think they just want to check & see that all is well...no leaks & so on...........don't scare me.........do you do your own maintenance on your car ?

    Como,

Yes i do all servicing & maintenance on my car.
I never did heavy and involved tasks like rebuilding engines and such in the past but now i do everything as i simply can't trust any other person working on my car (To long story as what i have been through in the past)
I have spent nearly 15000 grand on a garage and equipment.
I am the only person in the world designing a turbo kit for the 205 gti 8v.
I think avo (advanced vehicle operations)run by Terry wilson r the only company i know of that has undertaken a turbo setup before me in Australia (But it was not a kit)
It was a setup they have done for someone and i happened to be behind him with a friend in the passenger seat.
I remember telling him that little thing just came out of avo i wonder if it's turbo (he might have been testing it on clayton rd in front of bosche).
With over 400hp i had reason to be confident but when i noticed him mash the pedal about 6-7 car langths in front of me.
I did not hesitate to give it a go and thought i would just thrash right past him. :p
Well i wrong i gained on him slowly (I could not believe it)I should have dropped back into 3 as it gave me a good run for my money(on the roll of course). blush
Thats how my obsession with the 205 started and wanted a turbo 205 ever since.
Anyway i thought u might find it interesting little story.
    wink

Interesting story, I have read about your interest in the turbo kit from earlier messages. I hope it works.....i may even become a customer.....but over the last year I have spent about 7 grand on my car to get it up to spec...i got it for 9 grand last year. Anyway, do you know Rob Cherry ( i work with him) he use to be the President of the Vic Peugeot club for a while.

mmm. $2500. Thats the same price I paid a couple of years back for a pretty full rebuild (new pistons/ liners, head service, new bearings etc etc) of an XN6 motor at P504 in Sydney a couple of years ago. The piston/liner set made up a significant hunk of the cost then. ( I was stuck in Sydney visiting my father's retirement village, and for some reason the management wouldn't let me do the job in the driveway.)

Does anyone use Bob Watson in Hawthorn? or Howard (forgotten his second name) in Montmorency? They both used to be pretty good value for money, according to friends of mine.

We had a Renault 12 auto transmission rebuilt by Alpine Affair in Ringwood a few years back. They did quite a good job, but weren't cheap. An aquaintance of mine used to swear by them for work on his V6 Renault Alpine (converted to RHD by them, of course), but hey , that's always been their specialty and he was a barrister, about a hundred bucks a word....

Gave me a drive of it once. Nice!

    Cheers

    Rod

    Rod,
My 505GTi was serviced every 5000km at Bob Watson's by the previous owner (my grandpa). There very proffesional, but i'm not really a fan of there work... They broke a stud off the head, which connects the Exhaust manifold, and then failed to inform my elderly grandpa. They also seem to leave a mess when they service the car, with oil everywhere and big stratch marks on the Rocker Cover.

Today, i replaced the spark plugs, and i found that one of them was of a different type, was cracked and had a much bigger gap then it should have. It was REALLY difficult getting that plug out (i bent two large screwdrivers) and it seems that they must have found it too difficult and didnt bother.

But they do give you a proffesional looking report listing everything that needs doing, and everthing they did.
    So... I Dunno...
