If it's a bit of a slapping sound that varies with engine RPM, it could be the timing belt. It happened to me (luckily I got it fixed before the timing belt had a chance to break, slip, or do anything nasty)

It's fairly common knowledge that GTi6s are harder on timing belts than most other engines.. the factory replacement interval is 80,000km but many agree that every 60,000km is better.
