505 Door Check Straps

Three out of the doors on my 505 have broken check straps. Is there a way I can replace just these? By the looks of it the straps are integral to the hinge, which is rivetted to the door. Please don't tell me I have to replace the whole door just to renew the check strap as that would just be a pain in the clacka.

I'm sure you would be able to buy them separately...

However, you can dismantle the hinge, so maybe that's how much you can buy?

yes they can be renewed with ease ! Back doors are usually fine, although the ones on the GTI in Launceston will not be the same as your car because they changed in 1984.

I have a couple of the old style ones here *i think* although I did replace a couple on my sisters early STI when we got it..

Does this mean that the entire back door is different to the '83. If that's the case it looks like I have a '85 GTI rear right window to sell.

The doors are EXACTLY the same, apart from the check straps the rest of the door is the same!

How many do you need ?

I think I found 1 yesterday when cleaning up my workshop!

Door check straps are available new, Euro. Imports charge about $15 ea. and fitting them is simply a matter of taking the door trim of, unbolting the old ones and refitting the new. This is assuming that you have the bar type that slide inside the door, the other C clip type are also available for about $10 bit are a bit trickier to fit. you mentioned needing some other parts, let me know what you need because I am wrecking complete car and bringing a fair bit with me when we move over. probably late Feb. Will be there for a quick visit from the 13th to the 23rd of Jan.
