306 S16 Clutch

About to start looking at replacing the clutch /cable on my 306 S16. The local dealer has suggested $1500 NZ for the job. Do I have any other options for the clutch or do I have to replace it with PUG parts ?

Anyone had a clutch done before , if so what was the cost, problems etc ?

..that seems a little high. 4 years ago I paid total $1300 for a race/h-duty clutch, this included all labour costs, fluids and a basic service (oil, filter and clean of air filter). J4rs mentioned to me that its not an easy job and quite time consuming on a S16. My clutch is not a genuine PUG part. - Chris

$1500 sounds really steep, but that is how dealers are I presume.

I know the S16 is a hot car but its still just an XU motor underlying.

In Auckland the two Peugeot mechanics that I deal with have quoted me about $800 to do the clutch in my 405 SRi which has an XU motor, there are differences of course.

Whilst I can see it being a bit more to do than a 405 I can't see why it would have to be nearly twice as much.

I don't think you will actually be using 'Pug' parts but the official clutch kit which is from Valeo I believe.

I suggest you seek out a specialist Peugeot/French workshop. I know Auckland has several but I'm not sure what the situation is in Wellington.

I think alot of ($$$$) this has to do more with the labour behind the job, not so much for cost of the actual clutch itself. From memory J4RS (who works as a pug mech) said "its a pig of a job", as the S16 is bloddy tight in working room, alot of things needs to be removed and got out first. - Chris

guys,

changed my clutch in April 2004....easiest way would be to remove the top engine mount and jack up the engine....you will need to remove left wheel and driveshaft...these are things i replaced...

1. Valeo clutch kit (another option is using Sach clutch kit for 1.9 TD
2. Clutch cable (mine is a 93 model so the cable is the same as 1.9 TD newer models has the plastic end)
3. Driveshaft oil seal
4. Flywheel oil seal
5. Check you gearbox fork bushing

the total cost of parts and labour was 350 AUD...

...thats a fair bit of labour there senthil, your a patient and resourcefull bugger. I don't know the kit brand, but it was offered by North Shore Rally sport and is the same one they used in their GroupA Gti6. I have a feeling its a custom unit built to their specs. But suited to my BE3TT (standard S16) box. 4 years on, 60,000K's and 2 season of supersprinting and its still awesome. The cost supply/fitted and minor car service was $1300 with 12mth warranty, but that was 4 years ago. - Chris

I think my quote was $750 for the clutch package (did not include a new cable) and around 5-7 hours labour - they said the S16 is more work as in labour hence the cost ( I think they charge around $60 an hour).

There is a Citroen garage in town (not connected to the dealer), I may ask him if he does Pugs.

Not that I race my PUG (the powder coated White Pug Rims are all show) but I just love sneaking up on Sub Wagons on the Motorway in 4th and just giving them a wee hurry up from the slow lane as I wipe past !!!!!!!

If I can get a race clutch for the same price as the PUG dealers quote then I may go with the race option as long as it doesn't affect the warranty (got a 3 year warranty when I purchased the car from a dealer 3 months ago.)

You can take a look at Helix Autosport clutch kits....they have for group A, N and also for fast road applications....not sure about the warranty....better check with dealer...below is the website....
