    Default Strange engine noise 180

I've just noticed a noise my car seems to make at spot on 3000rpm. Not 500 above or 500 below. Everytime the engine hits this figure there is a kind of metallic whine. It's very hard to describe. I'm not sure if it's some kind of induction, or what. It occurs whether revs are increasing or reducing. If I put it in neutral and keep the revs directly on 3000 the noise will continue until I change the rpm.

Anyone else had this with the 180?

    Default Noisy Engine?

I had a similar noise on my 138, it turned out to be the water pump!
    Its worth checking out.

I got my pump replaced under warranty, what is interesting is that it took three months before they fineally discovered the area of the noise.

    cheers

    Tony

I had another listen to it last night. I think the noise is an additional raspy sound to the engine noise. The mechanical equivalent to having your lungs full of mucas.

    Icon11 Hope this helps

I recall reading an article on the 206GTI website, culprit being the engine cover vibrating at similar revs.

    Hope this helps.

I had something similar in my 180. Got it checked out and it turned out to be an exaust shield that was vibrating at 3000rpm. Also got told to look out for the engine cover vibrating... haven't had that as yet but the dealer said it's an easy fix if it happens

    hope this helps

BTW they were able to fix it by "realigning and tightening" the exaust heat shields.

    good luck

    Thanks for the info Dicko!

I also get this strange rattle-type noise but only when the engine is cold and when it's at a particular rev range. I've asked the guys at my dealership to try to listen for it while it was cold but they couldn't hear anything. I might ask them to try tigtening the shields on the exhaust based on your info.

It's not the engine cover in my case. I've removed it and taken the car for a spin without and still got the noise.

I'm in exactly the same boat as all of you. I had the fix done(apparently) but the noise is still there. I also have a rattling noise coming from the clutch too that they said was corrected but I still get that noise too, although not as bad. It's going in for it's recall on the 31st so I'll get them to check it out again for me.

If it's the engine cover, you'll find that it resonates at exactly 2800 rpm (in the 138 -- can't see why it should be any different in a 180), which corresponds pretty much exactly with 40 km/h in 2nd, 60 in 3rd, 80 in 4th and 100 in top. Pretty much without exception, most 206 drivers couldn't give a rat's for the coincidence of this audible cue, and many with other priorities find rather that it simply interferes with the subbie. I quite miss it since I fitted my Devil exhaust ...

The noise is definitely not the engine cover as I driven with the cover off and it's still there.

Yes, the 180 cover is definitely different to the 138 - no vibes on mine. I miss it too, Mr Bern - I was quite partial to the note it made.

Griff, are you sure it's not the extra induction noise that seems to appear rather rudely when that second valve opens on the inlet pipe? You know, that rabbit warren-like extra 2 metres of hot plastic...

It's not exactly metallic, but it appears to be at about the same point on my car.
    Regards,

    Simon
