    Default 504GL auto trans questions

    Hi there

my 504 with the 3 speeder is leaking big time, though only when parked facing uphill. change down is a bit clunky at times otherwise it shifts fine. Is there anything that the basic diy-er can do on these? am too broke to take it to a mechanic.

    thanks for any help.

    Patrick,
Allow me to suggest a 50c possible fix.
Is the auto trans overfull? Use proper procedure when checking ie when warm and trans in Park. If it is the BW 35 box, it's only a half litre variation between Low and Full. ....

Is the leak coming from the speedo cable? If so get a seal and O ring kit for the cable and drive gear assembly. Easy job for a bloke like yourself and a Kiwi to boot!

Once again, if it's the BW35 box the smooth operation requires correct kick down cable adjustment or the more complicated band adjustment. At this stage don't concern yourself too much with this. Besides IMHO when you can detect the changes in a BW35 it means it's working OK !

Try the new seal kit, wash everything down and watch.

Or you can try the freebie solution that was offered by a Ford dealer to an owner whose 12 month old Falcon was suffering a similar problem. Park the car so the nose faces down hill.

Check to see if the fluid is the right level first, as that could be causing the erratic changing.

does the car lose drive or pick up revs like it is slipping when cornering ?

if so the fluid level is down

i would drain and put new oil in and see how it goes from there

if that doesn't help then waht is needed is info on what box it has

it could be either a borg warner or a ZF

check the cooling hoses to make sure they aren't leaking fluid as that is usually the first place they will leak and the 2nd place will be the sump on the tranny

park the car up on a gutter if you don't have ramps and clinb in under the car and have a close look around to see where there is fresh oil

the other thing you can do is take it to a car wash and jack it up and give it a damn good clean under there before checking to give you a better idea on where it may be leaking from

if it is a ZF box then a new filter may be in order

finally got a chance to crawl under and have a look. it's a borg warner box and it looks like the leak is coming from the speedo cable seal (at least I guess that's what it is, at the rear). will get a seal kit and hope.

    thanks guys.
