Default Just joined & looking for a Pug

Hi all, first post ever. I just joined the forums.

    First, alittle about myself.

I am 26, just completed a Diploma in Network Engineering, now that I have the education, employers want the experience. It enver ends...but it wish it began.

Anyway. I currently drive a Nissan Patrol. 85 model Turbo Diesel. It goes hard, and its for sale so I can buy myself a 94" 306 XT.

What I wanted to know about the XT is, some places I see the 94 models have drum rear brakes, while other places on the net say its got 4 wheel discs. And their options are different each time I read them on different sites.

Could one, or any, or all of you please explain to me what the 94' 306 XT has?

I am pretty set on this car, I know there are better, but unless you are offering me some money or giving me a newer version under $7000. I have to stick to my guns...or the missus will kill me.

I have found 2 306's that I like and are within my range. One of them is alittle higher, but its at a dealer, comes with a 3 year warranty and its easy for me, cause I don't have to worry about getting rid of the 4X4. Just trade it in and that's it. So I am willing to pay alittle more for a scenario like that.

Otherwise the private sale will have to be quite an exceptional deal.....otherwise I'd be looking at a Series 2.

What things should I look out for as well?

I have read then entire forum before posting this thread, and have seen that the majority of faults regarding the 306 are Air con compressors.

Then its just the usual electronics (easily fixed by me), clutches that normally wear out, brakes that also normally wear out..etc.. But are there any major things I should look for like engine leaks in known spots? funny noises? etc?

Other then that. if I don't get this one I found at a dealer. I'll be wanted to sell the 4X4 even more, to get the money for the 306.

After so many cars I have shown the wife, she has finally given the nod to the 306 XT.

Also, with regards to the sunroof...stupid question, but does it have a cover as well as the glass. So as to block out the sun or whatever? Or is it just plain glass?

As I can service the car for most, if not all things..stuff like ball joints, I just don't have the tools for...where would you recommend I go in Sydney for major work...

    Are workshop manuals easily available?

Are parts readily available..like clutches, CV's, gearboxes, etc? Are they pricey items or reasonable?

What is the most common failed parts on them?

Thanks to all that reply...you'll get thanked again, when you do...

alittle more about me. I don't beat around the bush. I am a qualified motorcycle mechanic. I left the industry cause I wasn't wanted anymore..after having a massive accident on a bike, losing a few months of my life in a coma, no bike shops want to touch me. Hence why I went to TAFE to be a Network Engineer. I also design logos for companies, business cards, stickers, posters, book covers, CD covers, etc as a hobby and something to keep money coming in the house...and handing it straight over to the bank..

I'm an honest bloke, I don't like giving or taking bullshit, so you'll probably find that I am too forward but I get the point across. I don't mean to insult or be arrogant. This is probably the longest post you'll get from me. HAHA.

Oh, and I am not a Nazi, I do have a sense of humour. After all. I am intrested in getting a French car, No?

    Welcome to AF ...

One tip, it's a buyer market at the moment (people can't seem to sell their Pugs), so if you see a 306 you like and it maybe a little more expensive then you budgeted, offer them your price and see what happens, could be lucky.

There is an XT parked in my block of flats. Looks rather plain next to the gti, but I digress. It has alloy wheels but has rear drum brakes; i am guessing it is the poverty pack version. For $7K there would be room to upgrade a little to an early (N3) xsi?? Dunno what the prices would be.

Anyway, I have had no troubles with mine (except electronics) and I wish you well on your search!

    Welcome to Aussiefrogs

Just quickly, because I'm on my way out, a '94 XT by default would have drum brakes on the rear. If it was specified with the optional ABS it would have disc brakes on the rear.

Can the budget stretch to an N5 306? They were introduced in '97 and had the much better 16v motor. I've had both an N3 and an N5 and would recommend the stretch to the N5.

So its drum brake. I really wanted disc, as I am sick of working on drums.

And no, I can't strech further for a nicer model.

I wish I could. but there is no chance...unless there is an N5 for the same price.

    Thanks.

Sound's like you have some mechanical knowledge .... could try a swap with parts ? Drums to discs, seen it done before (non-Pug)

I would honestly like to avoid doing such things, as I am already stretching the budget getting this car...if it happens.

If it were a HR Holden or something..I could spare $1K for the car, and another $4 - $5K fixing it up.

Are all the series 1 306's Drum? up till 97'? Unless its ABS as someone previously mentioned.

So Idealy, I want a 94 Model 306 XT with ABS. for $7K or under.

You should be able to get something decent for under 7k. I was offered $5700 for my 97 series 2 306 sedan (XR). I ended up selling it to a mate for the same price.

It was in good condition, had done 166,000kms, I'd just replaced the shockies. Mechanically was beautiful. Sadly there was paintwork damage where someone had taken a key to it in Melbourne & there was accident damage where I'd aquaplaned in the Myer Centre car park & hit a concrete pillar. I was never completely satisfied with the repair done on that. But it still looked in decent nick. If my mate ever sells it I might buy it back.

    Hey all.

Thanks for the info so far. it has helped in my decisions.

I am trying to debate with myself, in regards to the rear drums and if I should just bite the bullet and just get one.

I am just so over working on drums..really.

I have found 2 306XT's for around $5K in Sydney. only issue is. I need to sell the 4X4 to get them.

So, as previously mentioned. this is where the dealer's XT is better, just to save a hassle. I have put the 4X4 for sale, with no offers. So I really just want someone to take the 4X4 off my hands and I pay alittle more or ideal break even with a 306.

Wow, I have been looking and the most I am finding for that price is the 94 models. 97's are going double what you sold yours for.

That car, as tempting as it is...is $3K over what I can genuinely afford, and its also a 3 door. I need the practicality of 5.

Damon Beck at Gladesville Prestige on Victoria Rd, Gladesville is a French car specialist who also has a mechanic, Paul Vassallo in the garage out the back that a lot of us use on their Frenchies.

Damon doesn't advertise that much, so I'd recommend going in there as he always has a couple 306s on the lot. Alternatively you could just call him. You'll get a decent warranty on any car bought from him.

If he doesn't have the car you're after he'll do a mighty fine job in tracking one down for you.

Thanks for the heads up. Might call them up.

Edit: I called them up..nothing! Ah well. Thanks for the contact. I will call him in a month or so. He does have a deal pending on a 92' Model 405, which he said will be in my price range, but that is not what I am after.

I've been trying to contact that seller since the advert was placed.

There is no number to call, and the "enquire" button takes you to some forum you have to fill out online. which I have done on numerous occasions. I still await a call back.

*EDIT: I eventually got a contact on that XT. Its gone...months ago apparently. The add is old, it's just never been deleted or something.

**EDIT: Seeing as this has pretty much become a wanted ad. I will be posting my initial request in the appropriate section, unless one of the moderators could just move it there.

    Thanks

    Default Broadening my options

    Ok,

I have been looking around. I either find cheap and nasty 306 that are usually 2 Door. Or I am finding ones over $10K. Which is way over budget.

But I have stumbled upon the 405. Particularly a few Mi16's and GTi's and also considering the one that is for sale here. Just waiting to get back to on the price.

They are all well within my budget and some clean examples found on the net. I will be searching through this site for any issues to look for and what models are best. Also, I invite you to tell me your own opinion on the 405.

    Thanks

Yes, I saw that one, but its not that one I was refering to.

And its also out of my price range, and with an RWC, I assume its Melb.

I've already called up about that one. Going to go see it this weekend.

I wish I hadsome stretch in my budget, but the $7K limit is literally the limit.

Can anyone give me some info on the 405, or point me to a site that does? Cause I am having more trouble finding stuff on the 405 then the 306.

Also, is the 405 all disc brake? EFI? RWD? FWD? What are the differnet specs between the Mi16, GTi, and other models. Should I just stick to looking at the GTi and Mi16 models? Are the engines great performers? reliable? what's the mileage like in regards to fuel economy?

    Thanks,
