Default Which is better GTI6, or 180?

I'd be interested in knowing what people's opinions are in comparing the 6 & the 180? (based on both being new vehicles)

If you tired to drive a bigger wedge in AF .. you couldn't do better then ask this question. As valid a question as it is, too many times the RED mist flares up and it ends in tears (or a closed thread) ... people just can't seem to be objective about it .. and lest face it how can you? It is afterall just an opinion.

For reference ... have a read of this ... and enjoy.

They're both great fun (based on owning a GTi6 from near-new, and having a good fang in Simon's GTi180 when he was down Melbourne way.) I'm not a serious track-oriented driver though so I probably wouldn't notice the finer points of each.

If I were a potential buyer comparing the two, I'd be thinking more of practical considerations, e.g. the 306 gives more space inside the hatch area, but the 206 is more modern inside. Failing COM2000s vs. failing coil packs. And of course the 6th-gear versus "I can actually do u-turns" trade-off

I know given the car I own I'm supposed to hate the 180, but just can't

while we are on the topic of getting people all fired up

why would you buy an more expensive 180 when the clio is a much more dynamic car???

thats another topic that will raise some 180's eyebrows........ AGAIN!

    jokes people.... just joking here

Ok... Sorry, didn't want to stir up any animosity. Was just curious, I have the 180 (which I lurve) but found my base 306 just as enjoyable to drive in a different way. Maybe I should try and get myself a drive of a GTI6

The Clio seems like a decent car, but a few weeks back I went into the local dealer to have a look & was discussing price the guy asked me what I had, didn't know what the 180 was, then went and spoke the his manager. He came back to me and said his boss had said I probably made a bad decision which I was now regretting. Which seemed pretty damned condescending to me. That's actually put me off ever buying a Renault (I'm very vindictive & stubborn).

Performance - wise the 180 should in theory be the winner. 13bhp more and only 1086kilos instead of the 306GTI6's rather hefty 1214kgs.

I think the 180 and the GTi6 can't be compaired to each other!!!

Think about it.. The GTi 6 Came off the drawing borad in 1996.. with 167 bhp,six speed transmission and all the street cred of the 205 gti.. the press basicly dubed the car "a follow on for the maturing 205gti owner.." This before they relised the 205gti would be regarded as a classic in its own class.

205 Gti came out in highly competive field in europe.. R5 Turbo,Golf gti,Astra GTE16v,Fiat uno Turbo,Lancia hf turbo(1.6),ford escort RS Turbo... See what I mean!!! But still some how came out on top... on Paper it didn't do the numbers..some how on the road it could out do,, or a least match any of these!!! I was left scratching my head too a few times in my modifed R5 GT turbo.... All this said the 205 GTi had a presence, design and militant fan base that only could be matched by Vw Golf Gti thus giving it's cult status... oh yeah, chick's digged pug's too

Whats this got to do with the GTi6...

    well..

At PSA 205,,,,206,,,106,,, are of the same family vehicles the 306 was a theme follow on from the 309.... and shared a different build mandate, direction and price tag... try 20.000 GBP!!!!! in 1997
    206 GTI in 1998 13.000 GBP.....

The marketing for the 306 GTi6 was targeted upon the well informed motorsporty, mature better off client... the car for the guy who wanted a M3 but had'nt got the pay rise yet... but did'nt like tinee "it came off in my hand" hatchbacks.. sonb sonb and so on..... remember the ad "slowest in its class" where the GTi6 surrounded by supercars... PSA in one move killed the marketing of any other hot hatch of that time... Not only that the car blew the door's off everything else in it's supposed class.... clio 16v never got a looking ..even though it was a extremly pretty car..mk5 ford escort just looked like it was for the poor compared to ether of these... Golf had a wieght problem and it looked that way too. The only car that could muster the output to compete was the astra GSI16v it looked good and went hard,, just did'nt like corners...oh yeah.. or been there when the owner returned...!!! the GTI 6 not only smoked all of these, it went off to find some else to pick on...!

So, 206 GTi 180.... is not aimed a the same client or PSA think that client is not around anymore?... Ask your self this.. Why would PSA build the 106GTi that blew away its own 206 GTi138??? 206 was a different client base???? or was 160 GTi owners 205 GTi new school???? Why If PSA knew about the civic type rice,, clio 172,180,182,123456....,,and various other on fire hatch models did it build a car that seem's two year's late..????? Look.. I think the 180 is a great car.! But PSA could have done much more.. it built the GTi6 in 1996 for God's sake...the GTi180, name one thing on it that was unparrelled or better than in it class in the world market... Face it.. you could turn up to a current day press test of any of these cars in a GTi 6 and the jurno's would hold judgement untill they drove the 306..
The market still there... but is the same staff at PSA still there????

Things move on...PSA are now building cabs of all those ladies that want there own pug's.. so they can like the look of thier car now!!!...

I'm putting my body armour on now... support cause I'm going to need it GTi6 Crew..!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't driven a 180 and more than likely never will. I test drove a 138 and wasn't impressed in the 5 minutes I drove it. I drove the 6 and in 5 minutes I loved it, despite it needing a new exhaust and computer re-set. It just "felt" better, which is something you can't put down to kW or 0-100 times.

I also liked the look of it. The 206 range just seemed a bit "tall and thin" and the 306 looked like it had a lower centre of gravity.

Anyway, I remember when I picked it up and the dealer said "geez, I had a drive of it and it probably goes just as hard if not harder than my 180." Plus, when I went back to get some minor stuff done the head mechanic came in and said, "whose gti is that out there?? Man, you must like driving that don't you??"

PLus, the gti6 was $19000 whereas the 180 is still up around the mid $30K.

Mind you, if I had a 180, I wouldn't be complaining either, and if anyone would like to offer me a drive I'll be willing and able!

It would be unfair to compare the two cars. Gti6 ceased production in 2000.
Things have moved on, especially in the safety department. No side or curtain airbags, and no traction control in my car. Only possible advantage over the 180 is a close ratio 6 speed gearbox, which is a joy to use. Have not driven a 180, but I am sure it would fun, just like the "6" . Two quality hot hatches made by Peugeot. No more need be said !
