604 towbar

I have had a good look at the rear end of my 604 and there doesn't
seem to be any substantial hard points to mount a tow bar. I am
looking to have a 1200Kg pull and about 100Kg down load.
New regs now require a tow bar be "placarded" or certified.

If anyone has one fitted could you briefly describe how its mounted?

You may get a reply from someone who has a 604 with a towbar fitted.

FYI, I had a 604 back in the 80s - it was an 81 model.. there was no towbar but I've had 504s (cars and waggons) and 505s (cars and waggons) and have had towbars to some of them. Also, in some cases I fitted the towbars myself.

My memory of the 604 is that it is very similar in body construction in the rear to the 504 and 505. For those vehicles the standard towbar was located on the bumper bar mounting bolts (two) behind the bumper. The towbar consists of a horizontal tube with drilled mounting flanges at each end to match the bumper mounting bolts.

To prevent the towbar rotating, a brace consisting of a flat section is welded to the tubular section. This brace passes down below the lower rear valence panel and is secured with two bolts (and a right angled flange) to the floor of the boot.

I suggest you have a look at a few 504s and 505s with towbars. It could be that one may fit the 604 exactly. Have you tried a towbar dealer - I had a towbar fitted earlier this year to a 306 by Van Extras (North Parramatta - 9683 4111). They gave the best price and did an excellent job.

A phone call to a tow bar dealer would soon sort out your options.

If you 'really' want the certification on this tow bar you would have to have it professionally fitted, otherwise who would know?

The towbar on it was very firmly attached...

Lots more room under the boot of a 604, by the way, because the fuel tank is behind the back seat... the arm that goes forward should go as far as it needs to mount rigidly, ie. to the point where the floor turns up to go over the diff...

is that the white one that he has with the plate LOL 296 ?
if so that tow bar was fitted by carousel (i don't know if they are still in business) in moorebank near liverpool in sydney probably around 82-83 from memory
their main dealings were in towbars and such from what i can remember
i understand this is going back a few years but they did a really good job
i had them also fit one to one of my 604's and from then one just copied the design

Many thanks to all on this board who responded to my query. I have had replies from Finland, U.S., U.K. and one written in French that I am still trying to decipher The Internet sure does bring enthusiasts like us together almost instantly.

Bottom line is I have retrieved one off a wreck and fitted it just this morning.
