16 valve differences?

Hello all, I've posted this in the Citroen forum, but I thought some people in this forum might also be able to help:


I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the 16 valve BXs that Aust/NZ got were different from the UK spec cars? (in terms of engine at least). I think I remember reading somewhere that the Aust/NZ cars were down on power (ie. not upto the normal 160 hp of the euro cars)?

If so, what were the differences as compared to the Euro cars?

Australian cars were fitted with the XU9J4Z engine. This differed from the XU9J4 engine by way of compression (9.5:1 rather than 10.4:1), inlet cam pulley and cat. convertor. The US and many other markets also had the same engine.

Thanks, I assume this applies to 16v 405s as well? (rather than just the BX).

Yes, it's the same for 405's. It's very difficult from the outside, other than the ID plate on the block, which may be missing. The XU9J4 engine code is D6C. Can't recall the code for the XU9J4Z. Internally, it's easy. The XU9J4 pistons have a "Z" in the crown. The XU9J4Z pistons have an "X" in the crown. No, I didn't get that around the wrong way. Also, on XU9J4Z engines the inlet pulley is stamped with a "3", rather than a "2".
