Default 405 Mi16 front suspension knock

    Howdy,

Oh dear; trouble already in the new Stuey machine...

Actually, I noticed this before buying it - there's a knock in the front somewhere when you go over small bumps. You can feel it through the floorpan. My question is; is there something in the front that 'goes' and causes this?

The previous owner reckons it's done it for years, and he named two respected Pug specialists that've had a look and couldn't find anything.

I must say at this stage that I haven't even taken the wheels off, as I only got the special socket for the locking nuts yesterday afternoon. I'm just trying to circumvent the usual diagnostic routine if I can.

    Cheers

    Default Small knock ?

If it's a small knock - could just be that the nut on top of the strut is not tight, and the washer is rattling. Will need a 7mm Allen key..

Paul, you're not going to believe this. That's what it was! I was pulling around on the wheel yesterday as you do to check bushes, bearings etc., and nothing. This morning, I gave it a bounce on the side I though it was on, and the strut nut needed tightening. Then I come back here - and read your post. Thanks.

By the way, does this suggest that something's worn on the top mount which has given this clearance? I ask this because the nut's a Nylock and won't have moved.

    Cheers, Paul.

    Default 405 front end knock

Hi - My 94 SRI had rattles from the front when i bought it at 86000kms. I thought it would be obvious what the problem was and easy to fix. Not so.
I checked everything without dismantling, had it to 2 Pug specialists and to Pedders but no one knew for sure- I was told that it could the strut dampers.
Being used to RWD Pugs lasting 100s of 1000s of kms. this seemed unlikely.
I figured it would probably get so bad eventually that the cause would be obvious. 2 yrs. later it is worse and appears to be a wornout rubber at the top of the strut. Have not pulled it apart yet, but hope your tightening of the nut did the trick. I tightened one of mine so tight I stripped the hexagon trying to undo it! Good luck.

tresbon, mine only needed pinching up and it was very easy - no strain at all. I guess there's a rubber bush on top of the strut rod which has deteriorated.

    Default Too strong Tresbon

Tresbon2 - Sorry to hear you're Too Strong!
I didn't have to tighten too much, about half a turn.
It then got V tight, so - I left it @ that.
    Guess I was lucky.
