Default Timing belt change... how much should it cost?

I sold my old 206 GTI to a girl back in Feb. It had nearly 80,000Km's so it was due for a timing belt change. I met up with her in the snow last week and she told me that it cost her nearly $1,000 to get done.

Is $1,000 too much as this sounds way over priced?

Thanks for that... I was quoted between $320-450. I was also warned that some places tell you that you need the waterpump replaced, just so they can make a few extra bucks as it is a cheep part for them to buy.

I'll let her know and will also suggest that she joins this forum, so she can ask people's advice before she jumps in and pays rediculous amounts for parts and labour......

i replaced a serpentine belt and power steering pulley on my falcon two weeks ago for $60. Admittedly the ford guys used the hydraulic press to remove and put my new pulley on, but they did this free of charge as it was a 5 minute job. The rest I did myself.

how much is really involved with a timing belt on a pug?

    James,

If the 80k service AND timing belt change were both done (and by a dealer) then sadly, $1000k is the going rate. This did not include the idler pulley or the water pump, which as you said, can be added by certain dealers to inflate the price even more - despite there being nothing wrong with them.

Timing belt and labour component of my 80k service was:

    $138.24 cambelt
    $313.50 labour
$451.74 total Note: GST was added after this

The 80k service itself is quite extensive and is nearly $400 in labour alone.

    Regards,

    Simon

It's been discussed before at length, by some people on here, Smokey.

There is very little clearance to get to the timing cover on the 206 GTi/GTi180 - maybe 1-2" at the most. I think it's generally assumed that the engine is at least partially removed to gain access to it properly, ie. at least the r/h/s engine mount is removed and then the engine can be angled for better access, but I have no idea for sure.

It's certainly a completely different kettle of fish to a belt change on a north south dinosaur engine like a Falcon or Commodore!

I thought that Peugeot had capped the price of their services. A standard being around $140 and, say the 60K one being up around $600-700. A dealer showed me the servicing schedule and pricing in a nice spreadsheet. If anyone has a copy of this can they please post it??

Well, it does sound like you can have a whale of a time replacing the belt on the pug

    Excellent suggestion, Stone Free.

    Try the website!

    Peugeot Servicing

Shows regular servicing, plus separate lists for cambelts, brake fluid, transmission fluid, etc. And it's a lot easier to read than the cut and paste job you did

Cambelt replacement for the GTi is listed as $590

wasnt a comparison just a memory of my worst moment in motoring history (long story, but it ended in a transmission change).

unfortunately my pug 180 isnt going to tow my boat, so I need the dinosaur still.

Ummm yes, didn't exactly turn out as I had hoped. Anyway, thought it would be easier for those folks that couldn't be arsed following another link.
