    Default Oil for 8 valvers

The thread started by DooshDoosh regarding oil for his S16 raises many things to consider, but what is the consensus regarding oils for engines not so highly strung.
I used Mobil1 in my 95 405SRI from 80k ( when I bought it) to 160k when I thought this oil was a bit of an overkill, AND it was getting more expensive.
    I now use Mobil SynthS.

What are others using in these types of engines?
And.. is Mobil1 considered excessive for my wife's 1.8lt 16v 306 with 45k on the clock?
I change oil and filter every 10k on both cars.

    regards Decca

I use Shell Helix Ultra 15W-50 on everything that's a 4 stroke in my place. $143 for 20L from the Green Goanna.

Yes, it's a full synthetic, as used by Rallyart in all their cars. Green Goanna is a bulk lubrication distributor in Auburn, Sydney.

As our beloved 405SRI is partial to supplementing its petrol diet with a dose of oil, I use 20/50 GTX2 - lasts longer than the Mobil 1 it used to get. Have always stuck 20/50 oil in anything that's got over about 100000km or equivalent.

I am due for an oil change in a few weeks and have looking at different oils, was very keen on Elf but only avaiable in a 5w/40 synthetic, I have been using that grade but in a Shell Helix Ultra and I think it's a bit thin for my pug, is it worth spending the $$ on the synthetics or just go back to using semi-synth, I was looking at using Motul semi-synth but in a 10w/40 as per manufacturer instructions. Any suggestions...

I too query spending the extra for synthetics, but what gives me the irrits is the labeling of semi synthetic/synthetic fortified/synthetic technology/synthetic enhanced.. What does this mean???
NONE of the containers say what percentage is synthetic and what is mineral.
Could be 3% synthetic and 97% mineral and still be called any of the above.
I called the technical help for Valvoline and was told he 'thought it was 50% of both'
Why dont oil companies explain what is in their oils?
Surely most of the people who buy oil have in interest in servicing their cars properly and want to know exactly what they are buying.

Pugsy. why do you think 5W is too thin?

I have been using 5w/40 in my 205 and when the engine reaches operating temp the oil pressure drops off slightly and at idle it goes right down, I know at idle there is not as much oil being pumped around hence the drop but when I was using a 15w/50 the drop was never like that, I am going to look into the 15w/50 that PeterT suggested that's good value for a synthetic.

Agree to that manufacturers confuse the consumer, so many oils with special ingedient ABC which is supposed to be better and is reccomended by race teams, I think as long as it a known manufacturer the oil should be a good quality. I know since I have been using a full synthetic the car runs very well, so might try to stick to it if i can buy the 15w/50 in bulk.
