    Default catalytic converter

Just like to know what is the average life span of an aftermarket cat, I just replaced my cat again within 2 yrs.

When speaking to the exhaust shop they said the mixtures in the car must be incorrect and told me its either running to rich or lean, but the car is running perfect.

After speaking to a pug mechanic he said he also found that aftermarket cats only last between 2 to 3 yrs, but the original last around 8 yrs

Jus like to know if anyone else has experienced similar problems

As far as I know my 205 SIs cat is 12 years old original. Possibly the same with the 1987 GTI but I don't have any records for this.
What were the symptoms which made you replace yours?

If the a/f mixture is too rich and or if unburnt fuel reaches the cat, then this creates hot spots and sooner or later destroys the cat.

Your after market one is probably not stainless steel...only carbon steel and suseptible to corrosion. Just a thought
