    Default 98 vs 99 306gti6

i have driven two gti6's. a 99 and a 98, is there any differences between the 99 and the 98 gti6's? the 99 was quicker to respond. not sure if this is down to the tuning and condition of the 98 or if the cars have different specs? anyone know?

GTI6's are all the same spec AFAIk... the difrences between a 98 and 99 would only be cosmetic i.e N5 vs the N5 with a face lift (if it was after mid 99 made) that was released in 1999 details of the facelift are as follows

    July 1997

    N5 306 Introduced.
Changes and facelift across whole range.
    New nose and tail-lights.
    Revised dashboard.

306 Style introduced to replace N3 XR. 1.8 16v replaces 1.8 8v (except for auto)
306 XT upgraded to 1.8 16v (except for auto)

306 XSi upgraded to 2.0 16v motor (auto included)
306 Cabriolet upgraded to 2.0 16v motor (auto included)
306 GTi6 introduced (note, there were no N3 GTi6's officially imported)
    306 XTdt dropped

    1998

    No changes made

    January 1999

2 millionth Peugeot 306 assembled arrives in Australia (Red Cabrio)

    February 1999

306 XRdt released. (Turbo diesel version of XR sedan)

    August 1999

    N5 update introduced.
    Minor facelift across range incorporating following changes;

    * Clear headlight lense + indicators (H7 bulbs)
    * New tail lights for sedan (chrome strip)
    * Larger Peugeot badge on rear
    * All cars now have GTi6 front bumper and skirts
    * Door mirrors and protection strips are now painted (except for Cabrio)
    * Dashboard gains metallic highlights. Gearlever + handbrake button now silver painted.
    * Revised graphics on guages. White needles.
    * Remote locking key changes to ultra-sonic, increasing range and reliability.
    * Rear window wiper gains smooth look. Hatch window loses weather strips.

306 Style upgraded to 5 door body. 3 door dropped.
306 XT upgraded to 2.0 16v motor (including auto)
306 XR badge changed to XT. Receives same 2.0 16v motor (including auto)
306 XRdt badge changed back to XTdt (again)

99 will have clear headlights, side airbags, and EBD on the ABS (I think). It as a different gear knob, rear hatch button...and...erm...leather/alcantara as standard...although I think that happened in 98.

If you have the choice, I'd be going with the 99.

Mechnically speaking, there is no difference.

Yes, the different gear knob is one of the more obvious features I have to say. I have been in a 99 model and it had the silver gear knob and (from memory) a sportier looking dash. Mine has the leather trim though and it is a '98. The front fog lamps also changed I think.

Really? Thought they were round lights through the entire range. The S16 had the squares...

He perhaps is referring to the clear lense introduced on the MY2000 model.

Please refer to GTI124's Pug for photos. The black leather and ALCANTRA interior became standard for GTi spec.

had a closer look at late GTi6 '98 model. Differences to my late99 model are:

98 - has key lock for hatch
98 - side outside trim (bump trim) is matt finish
98 - front lights including foglights are glass
98 - rear hatch spoiler is matt finish
98 - window on rear hatch has plastic trim surround
98 - bottom lip of the hatch has a plastic trim
    98 - taillights looked the same (N5) as '99

99 - rear hatch does not have key access
99 - side finish is painted
99 - front lights including foglights are clear plastic
99 - rear hatch window is glued in , no trim
99 - no trim on bottom of the hatch

interior trim looked the same, side airbags not present or functioning (dash led did not light up)

    - edit -
99 - rear hatch spoiler is unpainted and different shape
