Hi....
Your choice of cars is interesting...they r both sensational vehicles and I think I m reasonably qualified to comment on both....since I ve got the keys for both....
To make a decision You ultimately must make a list of your prioraties...Whats really important to you???
So If you r really (and I mean REALLY) YOUNG at heart GO for 205,
If you d like to TINKER with the car a little bit...Go for 205....
If the fact that the car originates from 80eees is not important....Go for 205,
If the legendary STATUS of the 205 is important (ie.makes you even a touch proud)...Go for the 205...
If you r a bit of a tight arse with money (not being offensive...you know what I mean re. servicing)...Go for the 205....
If you want BEST HANDLING for money ..Go for the 205
If you dont mind the occasional creak and rattle from the dash...Go for the 205...
If all your mates are shorter than 5 feet...Go for the 205...(besides its only a two seater in my eyes)...those that want a ride in one should go and buy their own....
If you want one of the most STUNNING hatches around...Go for the 205...
ETC ETC etc e t c e t c...............................
NOW.....
If you r after a car....thats MORE (than just a little bit)..sophisticated...Go for the s16
If you like a BLOODY nice interior....Go s16
If you fancy the 4Wsteer trickery...go for the s16
If you like a more modern hatch look...go for S16
If the interior space is important....go for s16
If you like the sweet sweet music that is mi16....go fror s16
If you like your PS and Ac....and still no rattles...go for S16
If you like a quite but powerfull ride.....go s16
If you like handling...but fancy a reasonably cushy ride....go for the S16
Etc etc etc etc...etc....
So yes the decision is a hard one......I d repeat what alan has mentioned before...205 is more of a TOY (a bloody good one at that) BUT to be realistic it has its issues...Some can be fixed: that rattly interior can be disassmbled and reassembled...using rubber spacers and dry silicone joints.....interior can be quitened and that torn drivers seat can be fixed.....Its up to you....One has to commit themselves to a GTi....
The s16...is a much COOLER beast by its nature (not as playfull), therefore much more RELAXING......YES it will actually be obidient and LET you follow the speed limit and will reward with decent fuel economy (if kept below 3000rpm)....It will also SCREAM like a (I wont say it)...and will punish you with rather unimpressive fuel bills......Its interior allows for tunes to be heard and passangers to be seated in quite plushy soround....
Off the line...a stock S16 will have a stock 205 gti for breakfast and will then ask :"whats for desert???"...this does not mean we r talking about a 12 sec car...its bloody quick in the right hands and right situations and yes those DOWN TO SECOND gearshifts can burn plenty of rubber....but ADMITEDLY thats achievable in most GTis as well.....
The liittle GTi...is ABSOLUTELY sensational in the 80+ kay traffic...it will ZOOM past...shift lanes...slow down to a nice dance and than DISSAPEAR through a GAP that commodore driver didn t even see...point it (at the right speed and acc) to a gap or a corner...and it will get you there...and it will DO it to a centimetre...such is the precision of its steering and handling....Its ONE of the
only cars that allows for high speed POT HOLE IN THE MIDDLE OF A CORNER APEX avoidance/manuverability....its also one of very few (stock) that will let you feel STRAW (please dont go out and try this....you ll look stupid if somebody sees you) under your tyres....it will also follow every undulation in the road and needs to be constantly kept in check....
The s16....in traffic...requires more attention.....body is larger and does not feel as encompasing (if you ve ever driven R32 compared to R33) you ll know what I mean....The revs need to be planned ahead if you fancy keeping up with the 205....And the eyes need to be kept constantly darting as visibility is much better/easier in the 205.....The S16 is more predictable...should THINGS go amiss...and a nice brake set up in the s16 (abs) ceartinly brings more confidence in the wet stuff...but REMEBER it does have a heavier rear end...things can still go sliding to and fro....
