An XU family engine with a carby? Sheesh, I didn't know such an antiquated thing existed! I thought the XU engines were designed for the front wheel drive cars - all modern cars which had electronic fuel injection. What country are you in?

Anyway - you're sure the choke isn't stuck on? Do these carbys have an automatic choke?

have you tried adjusting the mixture and / or idle rate i know that may sound basic but it might help... is the butterfly on your carb not closeing properly is another thing as it could be sucking air and therefore not getting a corect mixture

Triple check that the choke is opening up when its warm, next check the float level. Also check that the jets are standard for the car.
You said this happened in the morning, does it go away when the car is warm? (when the choke is off)

Not familiar with the 405 Solex, but I had a similiar problem on a 505 and it turned out to be a pinhole in the power valve diaphram.

Sounds like the actual choke mechanism is still operating. May-be the choke needs some adjustment? Do you have a repair manual for the car? Check throught the fuel system section and find the auto choke settings. It may be adjusted for a wide cold opening and not completely returning to a static position when warmed up.

    Good luck
