    Pugrambo,

Could i get a copy too please? deal
I'm putting the new water pump in this weekend. I replaced the relay in the front of the engine bay and it turned out to be the ignition relay. So thats one less problem to be solved. dance

    cheers!

you forget all about the skinned knuckles, sleepless nights, hoses in "why in hell are they there" places, bolts that "why didn't they make them just a little bigger so they wouldn't snap so easy" sizes and of course the alternator position that you will all learn to love in time believe me, then when you go to wind down the rear window and the sunroof opens you will think bloody french cars

once you are driving down the road with the wind in your hair in pure comfort

hey even you other 1/2's will forgive you for all those moments where you said "not now dear i'm just not in the mood after playing with that stinking bloody car all day and getting no where"

The wife won't let the boys near the shed while i'm working on the cars and the dog won't come near me either

It's amazing the cars not going and it still drives me to a_drink a_drink .

    click <a href="http://au.f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/pugrambo_au" target="_blank">here</a> for some pics

    now then
from the volvo control box there are 4 wires you need to worry about
at the end of the wire loom from the box there is a white wire and a brown wire
white wire goes to negative side of the coil
brown wire goes the positive side of the coil

not far from the end there are another two wires that come out of the volvo loom from the control box
the blue wire goes to 0.4 side of the ballast resistor
the brown wire goes to the 0.6 side on the ballast resistor
these are both one one side of the ballast resistor
the other side of this you need the yellow wire number 24 from the pug wiring loom

wire number 112 from pug wiring which is green goes to the negative side of the coil and 112A is blanked off also the bigger blue wire that comes out of the loom next to 112A is blanked off as well

you should have a wire from the dissy that has a plug on the end of it with a spring clip on it that one of course plugs into the the other wire from the volvo box

if you need any more help just let me know and i can walk you through the process

now then when you go to put on you electric fuel pumps run the positive wire from the positive side of the coil
that way the pump only runs when you have ignition on
you can run a fuse on there as well to safe guard it if you like
make sure you also put a "T" in the return fuel line with restriction to run any excess fuel back to tank
you can blank the line off if you prefer but i don't do this
if you leave it dangle fuel will run out of it
if you leave it plugged onto the old pump it will pressurize the fuel tank

Just an update for those who are interested...

I looks at this stage like a cam problem on the right hand bank....so we are going to take the rocker cover off over the weekend and re-set the tappets and have a bit of a look at whats going on!

    Cheers

    right hand bank ??
is this the right hand one looking from the front of the car or from the drivers seat ?
604's have oil troubles and can have cam troubles in the left hand bank (ie from drivers seat left hand head)
there was a fix issued for this problem and basically it entails opening up the oil gallery into the left hand head to supply more oil to the cam

    Hi Sean,

What is a ballast resistor and what does it do?

On the fuel pump wiring, why not add a tachymetric relay? Otherwise your fuel pump continues to run when you engine does not start, if you leave the ignition on. Once you get your head around how they work, they are a no-brainer to wire.

    Cheers,
    John Lane.

as far as i know the ballast resistor is designed to lower an operating voltage to the coil from 12 volts down to 9 volts to maintain a low voltage to the points and condenser. The ballast resistor is bypassed when the starter motor is cranking the engine.
now as this is electronic ignition and there aren't any points the reason for it to be there i am not sure other than the car doesn't need a full 12 volts heading down the line
in the pics i have supplied you can see the thingy sitting there all connected up and as with other 604's i have seen with the same conversion they have been there as well
as i am not an ignition specialist i am sure someone can come up with a reason why it has to be there or even if it is needed
but it's there and it's connected and i have seen others the same way so i think there must be a reason

i can't see why you couldn't use the relay for the pump
    seems logical
i have just wired them up via the coil
or you could be tricky and wire the pump up through your tail lights
    i did this on a 504
works as a bit of a daytime anti theft device

The ballast resistor is used to drop the voltage to the coil whilst the engine is running, whilst the engine is starting the ballast resistor is bridged out, the reason for this is as the motor is being turned over by the starter motor the voltage will drop, if you were using a 12v coil it would not be getting full voltage and would not develop a good spark but if you use a 9v coil and apply the full starting voltage at the coil you get a good healthy spark, and when the engine is running you get voltage is dropped across the ballast resistor so that you get 9v at the coil so that you do not burn out the 9v coil. The coil can stand the over voltage at starting because it is only for a short time but if you were to run the 9v coil at 12v for a long period of time the coil will burn out.
