Default 505 air con-can they be upgraded?

    Hi

We have an 85 505 with air con. Its had a couple of regases over the years-It works but its never been great.
Just wondering if anyone has upgraded a 505 air con system or knows what it would need?

    Thanks

    Rob

Would be interested to hear anyones ideas on this, a one of mine will need to be sorted, the other of the two 505 wagons, an 88, has insane air-con, the kind you wish would not be quite so intense so i think if its working as it should be there is no need.

Try cleaning the leaves off the front of the evaporator, inside the passenger side of the engine bay.....they have been sucked in there and are restricting the air flow. You will have to take off the firewall insulation and then the large rubber boot, and get in there with a wire brush and vacuum cleaner. It will hurt your hands a bit to manipulate them in a confined space.

You'll be amazed at the results.

While we're talking aircon, any one have any info/tips on reinstalling an aircon system? Mine has been removed at some time in the past and it'd be real cool to have cooling next summer.

Maybe this is the last time I'll have to fix it...

You can assess whether that might be the problem by how much air flow you currently have.

BTW, of course the wire brush needs to be one of those small and slightly soft ones.

It's a bit of a bugger of a job to get your hands in there, but it can be done. It's not my own idea...a Pug specialist showed me how.

Talk to Bill McNamee in Canberra.
    He sorted my 86 505 GTI A/C.
I think it was a matter of getting a compressor from a 405 and a drying canister so modern gas can be used.
    Not hard to do......

I'd say a compressor from a modern Korean or Japanese car that have freezing cold A/C with almost zero effect on fuel consumption.
The 504 compressor puts quite some load on the engine.
