Post up a pic, it'll be easier than trying to speculate in one thousand words as to what the colour may be. Given that there were a few that could match your description over that period. Also I'd try another place, if they can't match by eye, and reckon that a formula mix will match, I don't think they know that 40ish year old paint will have faded from when it was applied........

Eye matching doesn't seem to be too hard from seeing it being done a few times for a perfect match.

Oh, and have a look for the ID sticker on the chassis number plate, if it is Aussie assembled, the Dulux label should be there.

    Default Colour codes etc

    Agree with Simon

    a) Peugeot has plate with exact type, although if not doing total job one has to allow for fade etc over 40 years

    b) It is REALLY worth finding a good colour matcher, especially if you have a representative bit of clean painted surface to give them

There is a crowd in Springvale ( Melbourne ) who are excellent , but this is of little value to you, but if you ask around there will be others in your area,

I took the (never used ) spare wheel of the 4CV, cut the surface back a bit with cutting paste and they were able to get a perfect match for the other ( slightly used ) wheels . Similar experience with Dauphine Gordini engine block paint.

They were unable to give me the formula for either, saying that 'it's all done by eye" AND that the exact tints vary a bit between manufacturers anyway. Don't think that they were being cagey/protecting business.

The secret ingredient seems to be the old guy out the back who's been doing it for 50 years. Where have we seen this before ?

A bit of asking around may pay off locally

The Melbourne one, which I can thoroughly recommend is:

    Complete Auto Paints
    30/2 Brear St
    Springvale
    Vic 3171
    03 9547 3937

    Good luck

From memory there was a yellow called "track yellow", but as others said there should be a paint tag on the drivers side inner guard - near the brake booster (that is where mine is)

Out of the 504s that I have owned, three were different yellows. One was Trak Yellow, another was Buttercup Yellow and I can't remember the name of the other yellow. As far as I know, all three yellows were the cars original colours. Tom_95s 504 is Trak Yellow.

    Hi Alpine,

I know the dilemma you’re going through, there is a million shades in every colour.

As the 404 is getting closer to being painted, finding the exact colour match is important to me.

The son-in-law who runs a panel shop, that has recently acquired an amazing system that matches paint almost perfectly. Last week, I visited Dan's business with a friend, who is the second owner of an immaculate original 404. Kim's car is the same colour as what I want, an off white...

    Anyhow, a long story cut short, this is how it went/works;
The inside of the boot lid was deemed the test area. Clean and no sun damage etc...
    Washed and polished test area
    Scanned with camera
Results were run thought a web app that has worldwide listings/connectivity
Simply enter make, model and year of manufacture. (Sit back and wait. A few minutes)
Print out supplies the optimum factory specs as well as the specs as per the scan.
The tints as per factory specs were mixed
A small amount of the mixed paint was applied to the test area.
After it dried, it was almost impossible to see any difference.

    The system used was;
    DeBeers’s Solvents - Two Pack
    Spectro camera.

If you're looking for a perfect match, I'd suggest that you try to find a panel shop with this equipment or similar.

    Cheers,

    Dano

not "trak yellow" for heavens sake!
Trak Yellow is orange and gets laughed at as a "clown car" I know, I owned one for a decade ...

fear not, I was a proud Peugeot owner - driver

To some, Trak Yellow may not be a desirable car these days while, to others, it is a magnificent and utopian colour which many 504 owners aspire to. I think it's close to safety yellow or Telecom orange.

In my humble opinion, some colours just suite some cars and this was the case with the yellow colour on 504s. It just looked right, bit like the Ferrari Red on a Dino.

I've got my eyes on a Teal Blue one, haven't seen one of these for over 40 years.

Would that be sky blue ? The last one of those I saw was in 1997. It was an import from South Africa, with an 1800 engine, weird dash and live rear end. My friend who owned it said it had a really sweet gearbox. Unfortunately it had rust issues.

No, a very bright colour, 1972 Australian assembled cars only. I think there may have been a few R12s around in the same colour.
