Default Peugeot 308 2.0 HDI rear engine oil leak

    Greetings froggers

So the saga continues with my attempt to purchase T7 308 HDI off a dealer. The car is a trade-in vehicle at a VW dealership. It's in good nick generally, except for a couple of wear and tear issues.

The most serious of these was revealed when the RACV check revealed an oil leak at the rear of the engine, supposedly at the vacuum pump/oil filter area. However I did some checking and it turns out it is almost certainly the rear main seal. I think the RACV diagnosis came because the leak appeared above the rear main seal.

Given that it is a roadworthy item in Victoria, it has has to be repaired. However this means the work will be done by a Volkswagen dealer mechanic.

This is where I get a bit hesitant. I am pretty much at the mercy of the dealer and the quality of the repair they perform. Putting aside our usual french car fastidiousness for the briefest moment, do you think a competent vw mechanic can be trusted to do this job right?

    Cheers

    Vik

A competent mechanic can replace the seal but, if you haven't paid any deposit or similar then I'd move on and keep looking.

Unfortunately I've already put a deposit down.

It seems this is not an uncommon issue with the the 308. However it is disappointing that an issue like this would arise within 5-6 years.

    Hi Vik,
Is it a Manual or Automatic.

To replace the rear seal the gearbox has to come out and to do that the drive shafts have to be removed.
Some gearbox oil may be lost when this happens.

If it's an Automatic then its very important that the correct oil is used to replace any that is lost and there is a procedure to get the oil level right.
There's plenty been posted on the forum about the correct oil for the Automatic gearbox.

    Cheers

It is an auto. My intention is to have the trans fluid flushed as soon as I take possession.

I spoke to the Peugeot dealership about the issue. They were comfortable with vw doing the work.

Now it's just fingers crossed that all the work gets done right and reasonably soon

Is this a VAG dealership saying 'yeah mate, this happens to all 308s' ?

Don't believe a word they say. The rear main seal was certainly dry on ours recently at 200K km's.

    Cheers
