    Default Battle of the GTi's

Last weekend I had a 206GTi 180 to thrash around, it was wet an cold all weekend which was fun to drive on. I got a mate and we took my 205 out with the 206 for a head to head... old vs new.

    1987 205GTi vs 2004 206GTi 180

The 206 is a fantastic car but the 205 isn't disgraced either, amazing how similar they are. 15 years newer makes a difference but it's also another $30K.

The 180 would have had quicker acceleration (ofcourse) but what I wanna know is how did i compare with the 205 around corners?

20t has a good number of things in it's favour... like kerb weight...

No, no, no! You've got it all wrong. You are supposed to say how useless the 206 is, and how it could never compare to the 205

Hi, I have compared my car (206 GTI 137HP) with one of my friends 205 1.9 GTI on a little track and we saw that 15 years separate these 2 cars.
Acceleration are almost the same but 206 is far more efficient in corners.
Of course, if 205 is modified (205 Mi16 or 205 Turbo are common modifications here in France), I cannot compete but this was not the point wasn't it ?

ps : sorry if my English is not so good, I'm doing my best

The 206 is quicker accelerating and cornering and has better brakes but both cars return the same "fun" factor.

Look what I found up the top of Mt Donna Buang.

How's the feedback in the 206? Are the brakes the mushy french style, or nice and hard when you need them, like the 205's?

My favourite thing about the 205 (apart from that throttle response) is the feedback from the controls. It all feels just perfect. I don't have power steering, but i imagine the 206 is endowed with that, and the associated dullness.

It would be interesting to see how fast a 180hp 205 would be against the 206. Weight vs balance.

    A bit unfair - a 1200Kg 206 V's a 900Kg 205 with the same power?

I meant laptimes. I couldn't care less about the acceleration in a straight line.

The powerful 205 wouldn't be the most pleasant drive, and i'm sure 15 years of development would count for something in the curved bits of road.

I just like my fantasy of owning a 180hp 205, and i'm not going to rationalise myself out of that.

202hp/tonne.. say, that's not bad at all. Might need a wee bit of a quaifey in the front.

yeah, speed's one thing but i dont think anyone whos driven both a 205gti and a 206gti can honestly say that the latter is more entertaining or more direct or offer an enthusiast more feedback.

as DTwo rightly points out, the 205gti is still the car that all other hothatches/gtis are compared with.

go home - you 206gti drivers have had too much to drink!

hey scott, did the gti180 power through and out of corners as hard as your 205gti? obviously the gti180 felt more secure given its more docile and user friendly package, ey? remembering the 205 is the complete opposite of that.

whats the gearing like on the gti180?

its been 20 odd years since the carnation of the original 205gti and this gti180 is what peugeot can come up with? anyone say RCS?

The interface is the key to the 205's power. Man and machine, together as one. Everything communicating seamlessly.

Few cars have that right, and the 206 just misses the mark (especially with that gearbox, eww!).

The clio sport is closer. That's a tasty hot hatch, and is really the new incarnation of the 205.

There are 2 types, first one is tu use 405 T16 engine (200HP) but this is quite rare because this engine is quite hard tu find.
2nd one is to use Turbo CT engine, this is a 2L 8v 150HP that was used on some vans (806, ...) or heavy cars (Citroen Xantia, XM, ...). This is a low pressure turbocharged engine and it is easy to get 20 or 30 more HP. It is usually used with a 205 GTI 1.6 gearbox to have short gears.
I've driven one on a little track and it was very impressive. Very light, very powerful, with a good chassis, stuck on 20/58/15 slicks.

You have some pictures there : http://perso.wanadoo.fr/jso/103/realisations.htm (sorry this is french)

Yep, we went past Sandown to see what was happening at the Alfa club sprints. That 405 sounded very loud, seemed to be getting around alright too.

The GTi180 is quicker than my car, but mines stock, but like I said before either car will put a smile on your face along a twisty road. I prefer the 205 simply because it's worth 1/6th and I can own it outright, and still afford a few other toys.

I say the measure is .... if someone handed you the keys to a 205GTi stock and a 206GTi180 and said "which ever one you take the keys for, is yours for free" .. which one would you choose?
