Turns out to be an early 1965, it has the 5 bearing engine.

The 206 was written off when someone backed into it in a carpark, thus it needed a headlight and bumper, I found one just around the corner from work very cheaply, so she's wearing blue for now.

It's beautiful to drive, so will keep it together for now and slowly get it to the road, though won't be investing anything in it till the 05's are done.

There is a drone/hum that builds from about 55kph, only speed related not revs, I initially assumed wheel issue and swapped over the set but no better. nothing particularly notable in the feel but bit disconcerting, leaning towards a wheel bearing possibly, I guess it could also be the diff?

Mocking up an air box for the red 205 now that the rads in, will fab it out of alu. Had to order some new silicon hoses so should have it plumbed soon.
New brake lines are on the way too.

404 went back up on the hoist, doing some bushes, did the rack boot, thought I had parts for the rack end joint so pulled it all apart, only to find I had the wrong size, so cleaned and repacked it all, there where some shims that I removed also to close up the socket, feels much better.
Where there different ARB sizes depending on model? The bushes I have seem a smidge oversized...
Draining the mollasis from the diff also...
Went to Wurth and picked up some under body sealer, as Well as some cavity wax, so will blitz it while its up.

Cheers Peter, enjoying doing a little bit here and there.

It was an old engineering factory when we bought this place, unfortunately it sits next to our long dirt driveway and the roof is all but a sieve, re roofing was supposed to be the next project about 10 projects ago

It looks like the engine block drain system.

Early 404's had a metal plate with a "gate entrapment" at the rear of the exhaust manifold.

They had a bent rod system with a plug and rubber washer that sealed hole in the engine block. From memory the bottom of the rod pivoted in lug lower on the block near the the sump face.

All in all it is quite unreliable as to sealing and most owners ended up tapping the hole in the block and fitting a tap or a brass plug.

Yes, draining the engine block when being left overnight in very cold conditions, as Rob says not very good, later cars had a tapped hole with screw in plug.

dates back to 203s at least; i'd wondered if there was not some sacrificial anode function - they did seem prone to dissolve ...

One for Graham , the photo of the steering rack on 6/9/2017 post shows the 404 version of the rack end right hand side , is this compatible with 203/403 rack ends - ie same thread , size - or totally different? Some have adapted Camry rack ends to 203/403 to give better steering , is this another possibility ? And , whilst about it , can the right side arrangement be used on the left on a 404 in place of the standard which is the same type as for 203/403.?

No, RHS is totally different and can't be used on 403 or LHS of 404. Yes, Camry bits can be used, you can cut a thread in the Camry tie rod so 504 tie rod ends can be used, Other Toyota tie rod ends can be used but some mods are necessary I believe. It does give an improvement, better self centring for starters. However, I find my 403 is great with standard bits but a 203 rack and 185 14 Michelin Agilis tyres on 5 inch rims, offset somewhat to clear the tie rod ends.

So, for the last few weeks, as i haven't had a registered car, i focused in on the white 205 in order to get it on the road with club plates, figgering it wouldn't be too Monmouth a task, i swapped an interior from another SI of Grahams, tidied, glued, beat and cleaned and on Thursday the 28th of Sept, she had plates. Friday the 29th, a friend of mine lost control, and put it into an embankment out near Thompsons Dam, and as far as i can see, has written it off.
So I spent yesterday collecting it and dragging it home.
Rear bear is busted, TB's are bent as is the R/H trailing arm, the Koni on the same side is stuffed, there is a crease though the floor in the rear, and the rear quarter panel has split from the arch, the windscreen has cracked and the frame is distorted, seat mounts have pulled, rear wheel is crunched and tire blown.

Luckly, no-one was hurt, but I am bummed, and no-one but myself with be driving my cars from now on.

In the innital recovery attempt, i thought i might be able to pull the rear arm out as it had pushed in to foul against the arch/floor, i strapped the car to a tree and tugged the arm, this just got it clear and i was able to move it back to our campsite for the night as it was already dark and nothing was going to be able to be done by this stage, in the morning with light i could see the extensiveness of the damage.

Better get the rest of my other Si and get your mate to reshell it.
I had just talked to the guy (at the FCD today) who had built the car up as a track car in Sydney when you told me about what happened to it.
I don't understand how you could lose control in that car? Not used to FWD?

Far out Cal, very tough luck, glad to hear no one was hurt. Iíve been on many camping trips when people have written off cars itís just so easy when they get enthusiastic on a road they donít know.
Make sure you call out if you need any parts if youíre going to re-shell it.
