Default Thought the 307's headroom was a gimmick, eh?

A picture is a thousand words, so here's a few!

Once upon a time there was a 307.
Its owner was coming home after a day's TVR racing.
One day, it met a tyre.
    This tyre weighed over 200kg.
    It hit the 307.

    Ouch!
    Oucher!
Ahh, a 307 with the headroom of a normal car!

The fortunate driver lived to tell the tale.

So next time you think the 307's headroom is a gimmick, think again

and a new set of duds wouldn't have gone astray there i don't think

i reckon he is lucky it hit close to the side of the roof in stead of towards the centre or through the screen as the story may have been a little different

That happened on the west gate freeway last year. A truck wheel came off said truck and collected a VT Commodore coming the other way with an impact speed of 150+ kmh. It hit the same spot as this Pug, but a lot harder. It pretty much took the drivers head off. The amazing thing about this was that the drivers wife had the presence of mind to grab the steering wheel, knock it into neutral and pull the handbrake on and pull the car over - all with her husband very much dead beside her - very impressive.

Maybe he was so dissapointed with the 307 & he went to extreme lengths to make an insurance claim or he just couldn't afford a 307cc so he did a custom job courtesy of the michelin man

I thought the headroom was one of the very few good things about the 307.

    Thats a pretty impressive story.

This would be a result of the location of the sensors to activate the curtain airbags. Generally they are in the B pillar (or nearby, generally includes the C pillar if you're dealing with a car that has a D pillar too).

In a lot of standard cars, they are generally linked to the triggers for the in seat side airbags, so given the impact was from above, they wouldn't activate. In addition, curtain airbag sensors can also be triggered by significant enough lateral acceleration (ie. rollover risk).

As you can see, based on the details above, there wasn't a situation that would cause the curtain airbags to deploy.

If the car had a normal roof line, the tyre would have missed the car altogether, and there would have been no expensive repair bill.
