Does anyone know if a webber carb can be used on a 505gr, and do you have to change the intake manifold, any help?

Centura 2-litre and Renault 16TS carbies fit virtually straight on... you can even run them without worrying about rejetting, according to Steve Dixon.

I think there will be some fiddling with ancillaries... linkages etc...

go to the wrecker and grab a 2 litre escort or cortina weber carb

there are plenty of them around

just make sure when you get one that the float will be at the front of the car when fitted otherwise the car will starve under acceleration

But they don't fit the original air cleaner like the Centura and Renault ones... you need to adapt, and it's not easy.

run the escort or cortina air cleaner if need be

but it is easier to find a cortina or escort in a wrecking yard then it is to find a centura or R16

i know of a 2 litre escort in the local wrecker here, if need be i'll go and make sure it is still there

can't recall the last time i saw a centura in a wrecking yard let alone an R16

The Weber carby will run more reliably but you will lose power due to the fact that it was tuned for a different make of car.

Graham... according to Steve Dixon, the Centura and 16TS carbies both delivered the same power and a slight improvement in fuel consumption.

And I think it's a bonus that you can retain every single piece of the air cleaner ducting... the car looks more original and there's less adapting to do, no worries about clearance under the bonnet etc.

They're out there... it's just a matter of finding them. I know there are specialist Chrysler/Mitsubishi wreckers who are bound to have one or two on the shelf from the Centura... this forum should turn up 16TS stuff easily enough...

'rambo... I'm not sure if I have one of those air cleaners... or where it is if I have, but I'll keep it in mind.

    cool

BTW this air cleaner is the easiest to modify for a different carb and is still original looking

While I haven't tried a 16 or Centura carby I have spent a considerable amount of time in the past few weeks trying a variety of Webers and Holleys etc. (even a single barrel 504 1.8) on my GR and have come back to the early Solex SEIAI as being the best. They all seem to have blocked idle systems, however.
I may upgrade to a 504 TI engine, these GR engines are quite harsh and non sporty.
