Default Anyone know about this WA coupe?

Hi All, I am wondering whether this 406 coupe is worth saving, but I have to get it back to SA first. Does anyone know anything about it? It has a stuffed auto trans, but is otherwise supposed to be reasonable, except needing a bonnet respray.

Hi Erik, I was looking at the ad the other day. No I haven't visited the vehicle.

It all looks in good condition but as you can see - the gearbox is already out and will be costly to overhaul being the AL4 auto.

Best bet would be to convert it to a manual - Demannu knows all about this as he converted his own car.

It will cost you a good $800 - $900 to get it transported back to SA then the cost of a manual gearbox and associated pedals and linkages etc.

Hi Roland, I am actually sitting on a reconditioned auto box for this model car and have been waiting for a dead one to pop up, but in good condition. Unfortunately the nearer ones that do so are fairly high km ones and are fairly tatty. The transport cost back to SA is a problem though. I just got a quote for $1200. Being a non-runner means that the normal car carriers won't touch it. I haven't enquired extensively though.

Don't forget the cost of registration etc. in SA as well!

My own 2002 coupe is a rare manual. It gets very little use and I have been pondering on selling it or maybe just playing with it on track days and classic rallies. It's in good condition with the exception of some paint refurbishment on the bonnet and roof!

I think you'd be better off with something like this:
    1998 Peugeot 406 Coupe | Cars, Vans & Utes | Gumtree Australia Nedlands Area - Claremont | 1125872202

The blue one looks like a bit of a money pit. I suspect you'd spend far more on it getting it up to scratch than the silver one.

If you're interested in a manual one, I think I need to sell mine soon.

And for your info, my 'fully rebuilt' transmission lasted 17k km before the oil pump tore out of the housing, prompting the manual conversion. I've been told by another 406 owner here in QLD that he experienced the same thing in his 406 sedan V6 less than 20k km after a $6000 rebuild. These autos are risky.

Hmmm. Yes I did see the silver one thanks, but I actually wanted a colourful one. Would dearly love a yellow one, but they are a bit too rare. At the moment I do have a spare $2k, but the sort of things you are talking about are probably $6k. I know that is money well spent, but, well, that is money I have already spent on a truck... which was more important.
