Default 206GTi - front end thump: WHAT IS IT???

    Hello!

    I have a 2002 206GTi with 62K on the clock.

Recently, the car has developed a loud and disturbing "thump" noise when travelling ay any speed, over any bump or dip larger than a cat's eye. It feels like it's bottoming out.

I immediately took it to a suspension specialist as I thought the front shocks were dead and bottoming out. The shocks are fine but the thump continues - it makes the whole car (and whoever is in it) shudder. The car is stock standard.

Any ideas about what this might be and how to fix it?

    Any feedback appreciated.

    hi pugnacious,

i have a 2001 60000km gti and havent had anything like this yet.
from previous experience on FWD Lancias and 2 205gti's it could be gearbox and or engine mounts. Might pay to jack the engine up and have them checked out. They may look OK but until you take the engine weight off them you cant really tell.

I bought a 205gti S3 with 160Kkm on it once that needed gearbox and 2 engine mounts but it wasnt making any noise at all, however they were all broken. Sydney car though so its to be expected with those road conditions.

it could be either the strut tops or one of the lower A arms

Agree with Pugrambo - have heard about people with problems with lower wishbones that have needed replacing. If it's still under Warranty i'd be taking it back and getting it looked at.

62K on a 2002! - makes me feel better about only having 32k on mine

Thanks for all your advice, guys. Lucky for me it's just run out of warranty!

I will certainly have it checked for engine mount or suspension problems.
