    Default 405Mi16 or 306xsi best in 205

    Hi guys
So I have two possibilities for a replacement engine to go into my S1 1987 205gti.
    First up is the 1.9 16v from the 405 Mi16. 1989 vintage and 250k.
Second is the 2.0 16v from the 306 XSi, from 1998 and with 215k.
Both cars run are yet to be broken so have access to all mechanical and electrical components.
My question is which route to go? What are the relative power figures for those engines, and which is the best to find its way between the chassis legs. Is one much harder than the other to instal?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Martin

XU10J4R - heavier, needs a 65mm high engine mount. Harder to integrate original sensors etc., exhaust bolts straight up.

XU9J4Z - lighter and car feels like original, fits on original engine mounts, sensors match up, needs exhaust wedge and shortened inlet manifold

Cool. The 9 wins! Can start stripping the 306. Do you do the exhaust wedge? I'm not running ac so can I just move the coolant rad forward and not worry about shortening the inlet? Also, wiring wise, how hard is it

Have a look at my project slow thread as I'm doing that at the moment and documenting the challenge for a novice like myself. THe last pics show how far forward the intake really sits so I'm still debating on whether to look at shortening or not.

I would fit the 306 motor. Look at Robert Riggs car. Makes a really good road car.

Both of those motors will need a freshen up in the future given the kilometres and the 306 motor is easier than the wet liner xu9

I wouldn't be so fast to dump the 2L either. It's a cheaper and easier mechanical installation. But then you have to unlock the ECU from the XSi before removing it. And as Adrian said, both engines are long in the teeth. The 2L is a cheaper and easier rebuild.

Also, the Motronic 1.3 is fairly dated and can be an absolute pain with the AFM.

Correct whilst the XU10 is a harder job its tidier and seems neater that the thoroughly untidy discrete XU9, XU10 is easier to overhaul too. Just my experience.

    FYI XU9J4Z is 1.9L Mi16 , and XU10J4R is 2L 306

my only opinion is that if your budget isn't huge than it sounds as though the XU10J4R could be a more reliable proposition if unlocking ECU from 306 isn't hard...
But then again if 306 engine wasn't serviced as regularly than it may be in worse condition.... but as referred to, at those km's a refresh in near future will be needed.

I've also heard the XU10J4R is less prevalent to the oil surge issues. Or it could be that they are easier to mod to prevent it.

If going the XU9J4, an aftermarket ECU could improve long term reliability and the ability to ditch the afm and as PeterT said, the 1.3 motronic ECU's are getting old/scarce, and can cause trouble.

Soo, it looks like I'll keep both engines intact with full wiring and ancillaries and do my homework on which lump gets the nod. I'll compression test them both to get an idea of health. I'm just about to modify the 306 ad for wrecking that I put up earlier this week.
Cheers for the input from all those involved.

    Neither!
Spend the money required to do it properly and put a turbo on the standard motor. 180hp should be good!
