Peugeot 206 GTi Engine Mount - weird prices!

Hi Froggers,

Hoping for a bit of advice regarding engine mounts - I took my 206 GTi to a French car specialist today to ask about rear shocks, and received a bigger than expected quote because the RH upper engine mount also needs replacing.

On eBay, they seem to be only $33-40, and I think the version that the mechanic was going to order was about four times that much. Is there any explanation for such a huge gap in price? I also dropped in to Repco to see how much they charge for the mount, and they said $178.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure. They should only be as you say. The second price sounds like the later model price (ie. 308, C4, etc.) which is a different kind of mount.

Alright - I'd wondered if I'd missed some important detail but it just seems that some are super exxy. Have decided it's hard to justify spending a small fortune, so going to DIY it - lucky for me I have a handy Dad with the know-how. What a shame that some people will be stuck with only an excessively expensive way out!

Now that I've looked at ServiceBox, an "official" price from a Pug dealer is around $81 retail, for the top mount.

Has its fluid leaked out or is there something else wrong with it?

Thanks for checking that Simon. It's hard to get a good look at it since the ECU is right above it, but it doesn't look as though there is fluid coming out. The mechanic just described it as 'broken' - I will get a proper look on friday when I can get in there properly. Have ordered a new mount from BrakePro. God knows why Repco wanted $180 for it!

So I'm the Dad referred to above, and we got into the car this morning. Engine mount had no leakage and the only possible damage visible looked like a 10mm crease in the rubber. After unbolting a few things this turned out to be a very deep crack and the mount was almost in two pieces; it had been hiding it well. 'Puggo' took a photo maybe she'll post it later.

FWIW shocks were $220 the pair ALKO made in germany, RH Mount $60, forget the brand. I know there are cheaper shocks on eBay but we went Brakepro Lithgow / Bathurst as they never do rubbish brands and I recommend their service if you live in this area.

Car was tending to oversteer when the power was put on to come out of a corner. My guess is the broken engine mount allowed a bit of torque-steer and then the rear shocks weren't up to keeping things in line. It is driving really well now.

The two jobs only took us two hours including the fiddling about required to torque the rear shocks at the correct length / ride height.

....but here it is out of the car, compared to the new one! Attachment 88897 The broken off top part was hardly hanging on

If it still experiences oversteer issues, it may well be that the rear trailing arm bearings are shot.

They are similar to the 205/306/405, but probably not quite as complicated.

There's a few youtube videos that show the procedure (like this one), but again make sure you are looking at 206s not 205s.

that's a good point and also a good video in the link. I did give the wheels a good shake while they were jacked up and didn't find any play so hopefully we are all done for now.
