Default My Peugeot 205 GTI - Miami Blue

    Evening all,

I mentioned earlier last year that I had purchased an S3 205 to gradually bring back to top condition and share the duties as a daily driver. This isn't really a 'build thread' like some of the other amazing projects on here, but thought I'd share some progress and some pics of how she's coming along.

The car was pretty good mechanically, but needed a bit of attention given to the faded paint on the roof and a general tidy up. I've spent the last 10 months or so replacing any interior part that was not 100% as well as spending a heap of time cleaning and treating all of the surfaces to bring them back to life.

The previous owner had spent a bit of time on the car replacing all engine hoses and a bunch of other stuff, however, the engine was running a little rough at idle. Thanks to Bill McNamee it is now running like it just rolled out of the factory and has proven to be reliable being driven to work 3 or so times a week. Absolutely loving it.

Without boring you with every detail, the notable things completed / replaced include:

    New radiator, Coolant header tank
    Engine mounts, AFM bracket
Interior heater fan, New air horns
Timing belt and tensioner, Crank sea, Cam seal
Exhaust headers, down pipe and O2 sensor
    Inlet manifold gasket, Injector O-rings
Replaced any mismatched bolts with originals
    Koni sport shocks
Reset factory springs and rear beam to match
Replaced any worn bushes and toe links
    Tyres, oil, filters, coolant
Heater vents, Interior light, Speakers, Custom floor mats
Nose badge, Boot spoiler, Vinyl door / pillar trims, Rear panel
RHS rear tail light lens, Front headlight restoration (paint and reseal)
Full respray (doors closed) in original Miami Blue

The remaining big things on the list are a recover of the front leather seats (stitching has come lose in places), restoration of the wheels and a recondition of the rear beam.

Having a heap of fun behind the wheel and excited to drive it at every opportunity, put about 8k on the clock so far. I've noticed the little 205s seems to be drawing a bit more positive attention these days than they used to also. Guess the square shape stands out amongst the rounded cars these days.

Thanks to everyone on the forum for help with questions and parts. Love that the Peugeot community hasn't changed at all.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the pics. I'll update the thread with any major progress.

    Cheers
    Ben

What an absolutely stunning vehicle! It must have stood out from the crowd just as much when new!

Where are all the cracked plastics, and gear knob?!

Any pics of the engine bay?

    Thanks guys.

Haha. It's actually in pretty good nick. There is a small crack near the instrument binnacle which I will get plastic welded.

I just checked, unfortunately no new pics of the engine bay. This is as close as I could find, from when I was changing the oil recently.

pretty beautiful! thanks for the tell and show, and excellent photos.
great interior with the red carpet and worn and lovely leather.
interesting how the contrast between the colours of the body and the wheels
makes the wheels seem bigger. all very funky, well done.

Thanks guys. Yes, I always wanted another white 205 GTI, but the Miami Blue is a really nice colour, particularly in the sun.

I can't stop peeking at this thing,
I think with the tint, the red accents, and the big wheels, that colour is perfect.

Default My Peugeot 205 GTI - Miami Blue

    Evening all

Been a while since an update, so thought I'd fill you in in the latest and spam you with some more pics of the car!

I've mostly done non essential maintenance work since last posting as it has been running absolutely beautifully - Nearing 20k since purchase now!

I've spent a bit of time investigating the recovering of the front seat leather. The foam bolsters are all in great condition, but a lot of the stitching has come undone. It seems $2k is the cheapest available, but no guarantees on quality of the stitching around the bolsters etc. Being a bit of a perfectionist, I couldn't bring myself to run the risk of having seats that I wouldn't be happy with, so I had another thought...

I ended up purchasing a set of Porsche 911 (996) seats in mint condition for $850. I hunted around for a while, but picked the Porsche seats as they're similar proportions to the 205 seats (actually 1cm thinner) and don't have massive bolsters, wings or harness holes like a lot of the modern hot hatch seats. Just simple black leather sports seats - which still provide fantastic cornering support.

The seats were fully electric with motors for everything. I wired them up and all functioned perfectly, but decided I didn't need the height adjustment and was happy to ditch the forward / rear motors in order to save 12kg per seat - making them exactly the same weight as the 205 seats with the rickety tilt mechanism attached.

I had a mate who is a fitter machinist / engineer make up some brackets to connect to the factory Peugeot rails (so easily replaceable if I ever decide to recover the standard seats) - I can't see that happening though.

The Porsche seats are absolutely rock solid, perfectly positioned and cost half the amount of the recover! The other bonus is the rails and motors I removed seem to sell for about $350 each based on eBay. A couple of pics of them in the car below:

The rear beam isn't critical as yet, but I'm hoping to get to that early in the new year as well as recondition the wheels.

I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and New Year break.

    Ben
