    Default 307 EGR valve failure

EGR valve in 307 hdi 2l 100Kw fails inevitably

quite difficult to access it at back of the motor

    some suggest blanking plates ,

others suggest disconnecting the vacumn hose

has anyone disabled the EGR function in the Ecu here???

as suggested on a UK forum ?

Can anyone please explain the point of EGR? It seems to me that it is in fact closely related to the VW issue in that it appears to be doing something beneficial, but isn't really.

You take a tiny amount of the exhaust gas and recirculate it so as to burn off any unburnt fuel etc. and in doing so you slightly bugger up the combustion process. If you recirculated a meaningful amount of exhaust gas so as to really improve the emissions, the engine wouldn't run. What is the actual point?

Please enlighten me if you know the answer.

Diesels operate with excess air. The idea is to dilute the oxygen in the incoming charge - exhaust is naturally oxygen deficient and carbon dioxide is present. The lowering of combustion temperature kills off much nitrogen oxide formation. It's about pollution, but reduced cylinder/head temperature isn't bad. The power loss is a compromise.

    Now it makes sense. Thankyou.

When I've tried it myself using a paper bag, I've only found that it stops me being agitated; or puts me to sleep.
