    Default Pug 505 headlight refurbishment

Has anyone pulled these headlights apart?

I have a broken plastic bracket and some good alternative plastic middle sections. I've spent an hour or so trying to get at the mastic between the metal base and the plastic bit.

It's hanging in there so I wonder if anyone has any insight into separating the two parts. For instance is a heat gun appropriate (with due care of course)?

In the past (and again quite recently!) I have reassembled 504 trapezoidal headlights. I can't offer any advice on getting them apart, as the 504 units tend to separate themselves with age, but to reassemble I use aquarium-grade silicone sealant.

Try putting them in the oven under a low medium heat for a bit, that should do it.

    Hi Gerry

Do you desperately need to get it apart, if you have run out of headlights, I'm sure I can help you with another one.

I can't see how careful use of a heat gun would hurt....that's what I would do.

No, not desperate, just a good glass and good chrome base section.

But I do have 2 505's to run.

    That's fine Gerry,

Just let me know if I can help out with a headlight, I've got a few of them in boxes.

Yesterday I used the heat gun assisted by a broad knife to free the first of the headlight assemblies. All good

Working on the broken one at present. They don't come apart easily.

If anyone wants a base to get rechromed, you;re welcome for the cost of teh postage/. Its LHS and generally in good condition. The chrome is just a little mottled.
