Default servicing 505 oil bath air filter

    hello
the official instructions say to clean the filter gauze with diesel, the question is if it should be re-fitted as it's still "lubricated" in diesel (like k&n filters that should be pre-oiled), or should it be completely dry?

i cleaned mine with petrol because i reckoned diesel is too greasy and doesn't evaporate, was i wrong?
    thx

Clean it with whatever works. I always used kero. In use the oil in the bath gets carried into the mesh to make it sticky and hold dirt, so if it starts off with a little diesel on it, it wouldn't hurt.

The airway has a rapid U turn over the bath to catch the heavy bits and then through the sticky mesh for the fine dust. Cars changed to paper filters because some fine dust always passed the mesh.

Diesel is the best solvent there is. Ask any mechanic what they wash with (okay, you might have to find an old skool bloke the age of your parents) but they'll most likely say diesel.

My guess is the spray can heavy duty "export degreaser" sold in parts shops is overpriced diesel with some propellant.
