    Default Mi16 speeds...

Hi Guys, i went to Sandown the other week with my 1989 Mi16 which was great fun...but, i could only get it up to about 160 kph on the straights. I figured with the speedo going up to 240 and an engine that revs nicely to 7000 rpm i'd be able to go a bit faster then that... The car just seemed to lose puff after about 145ish kph.

Has anyone else tested out their top speeds?? (on the track, of course...)

My series 2 has done 170 very easily with plenty of room for more, but that's where I backed off so as to be on the safe side.

I also got 170 out of my 1990 Mi16 without any trouble. I think they should do about 210-215.

I've had my first 89 Mi16 up to around 175 but again, backed off to be safe

I don't even think my little 205 has seen the high side of 130kmh. No idea what it'd be capable of, but I assume it'd run out of gearing somewhere around 180ish. The old 740 Turbo was well capable of 200kmh+++.

The euro spec Bx 16 Valve has a top speed of 218km/h and the aus spec 213km/h so i would assume that even though the 405 weighs a little more it should be fairly similar.

I had mine up to about 180km/h, and it wouldn't go further. That was with one passenger and a fair bit of gear on board, though. Car wasn't running so well at the time either. Might test it again next time I get way out bush.

250 km/h would be 7800 rpm; I don't think Mr. Peugeot wants the engines to rev that high Mind you 250 km/h on a 405 Jaeger speedometer would actually be something like 235-240 in reality... But at speeds like this the aerodynamic drag would exceed the engine's ability to overcome it. The car's actual top speed is probably drag and RPM limited. The 405 rev limiter kicks in at 7200 I'm given to understand, so that should be an actual 232 km/h assuming that the power doesn't tail off too badly past the nominal peak RPM.

My CDN version 405 DL (like an SRI, but with 110 HP) maxxed out at an indicated 207 km/h downhill on a freeway with the entire family aboard. Now that was on HR tires and an empty road, and in reality was probably more like 199 or so. Still, not bad.

Nowadays I take the car up to 180 occasionally for a quick burst on a flat road, but at 314,000 km I don't want to push the car too hard.

    Maca,

The GTi6 would only make about 160kph at Sandown & about 195ish at P.I. while the Mi16 would only hit 180 at P.I. but was still 3 secs/lap quicker.

I think the (poor) drag co-efficient of 405's & the better bottom end torque of the XU10 engine would be the reason.

hmmnnn..interesting... well i did have almost a full tank of fuel and the straights are both uphill, but only very slightly. I thought it may be because the stock exhaust was replaced with a generic one ( engine stock apart from that)... Does anyone think that could be it? And what size are the original exhausts?

Couldn't imagine the exhaust having that big an effect unless of course they've suffocated it with some old style multi baffled wheezing kind of thing which most exhaust shops usually go the opposite. (Straight through with a ricey note.)
I'd be more inclined to look at getting your injectors ultra sonically cleaned, new set of plugs & getting a compression tesy done on it.
I have a BX 16V which is same mechanically & I have hit top side of 185 on a couple of occasions on outback empty wide roads and was still picking up speed at that. According to the guys overseas who often have track days, they hit top side of 200 often.

If it ain't broke, use a 12" shifter.....that usually does the trick!!

    I have s1 mi16,
    stock apart from k & n pod, 2 1/4" exhaust.
managed 210kph with two people on board quite easily progressing through the gears.

If i'm sitting on 100kph in 5th, then put my foot down without downshifting, it will bog a touch at first, then sing its way through to 200kph.
    (closed circuit conditions )
Yes Alan, when i'm not bitching about reliability I'm thrashing my car!

Can't wait to get this reground cam off PeterT,

Hmmm I find it kinda hard to beleive that a bog stock MI16 series one will hit the 250 mark, only because the rev limiter cuts in between 210-215, you delimit it then yeah sure.. I only know this cause when your driving along in 5th gear you will notice that the tacho and the speedo sit at exactly the same point.. I got my old one up to 175, the limiter in 4th.. I was impressed.. So was the guy in the Commodore trying to beat me to a form one lane....

Okie dokie... can anyone in Melbourne tell me a good place where i can get injectors cleaned and get a compression test done? Or, can any mechanic do that kind of thing?

So do I. I've been in an Mi16x4 at the rev limiter in 5th. It was reading 220, but probably 215 is more accurate.

I seem to remember a factory figure of around 237 for the euro spec series 1
MI 16. The 406 HDIs will do at least 190km/h on the speedo (in the Northern Territory, of course)
It is interesting that the 405 was quicker than the GTI6 around Sandown, Geoff.
The 405s seem to be very good on the track.

I have had my Mi up to 210kph with two people in it. It was sitting on about 6000rpm.

QUOTE[It is interesting that the 405 was quicker than the GTI6 around Sandown, Geoff.]

Actually , it was at Phillip Island where the 405 outlapped the 306.

The car weighs 1205kg with driver, full tank,no a/c.(The orig Mi16 was 1160kg-presumably empty of all fluids).

The 306 is qouted at 1230kg-however these figures are derived.

I expect the different style of power delivery between the 2 engines (XU9=revvy & XU10=torquey) would change the result too-ie: a tight, twisty circuit like Winton, the 306 should come out ahead.
