Default 307 1.6 Petrol STUCK IN ECONOMY MODE.

My 2003 Peugeot 307 1.6 XT died on me on Wednesday. I had driven it about 40 Kms with no problems, pulled into a Shopping Mall parking and it just died and would not start. Starter turns motor over but will not start. Lights showing are MFD:- Economy Mode Active. Warning lights are :- STOP, Battery (obviously will not go out as car is not running) and the light that warns of Handbrake on stays on even when handbrake is off and also the engine management light is now on. Have checked all fuses, spark plugs, brake fluid level. It is stuck in Economy Mode and it will not start. Have tried tow starting, jump start and a new battery to no avail. Any ideas please.
By the way I am a member of the Peugeot clubs in South Africa, UK and Aussiefrogs and when ever I have posted a query Aussiefrogs are the ONLY ones who reply. Keep it up guys.
PS I am in Cape Town. RSA and Peugeot service is not so hot and extremely expensive.
    TIA

I suspect VW diesel owners in the U.S. may soon identify with your problem.

Economy mode is nothing. It won't stop the car starting. They go into economy when the ignition has been left on to prevent the battery going flat. Sounds like an immobiliser issue

Probably the usual 307 issue, where it drops its bundle.

Could it be a weak battery? That would seem to be where 'Economy mode' is pointing...

I'm interested to hear more about this '307 drops its bundle' scenario, as I've noticed you mention it a couple of times. I assume the BSI crashes and needs to be reset? Is this a simple PP2000 job or do you need to actually replace a fried computer?

In relation to the OP's problem, I'm no Pug expert, but would a dying battery produce this issue?

No, you just reconfigure everything and re-program the keys.

Probably a great worry for people without ready access to Peugeot Planet or Diagbox.
