Default 308 Unusual deep resonant hum or whine

Have a 2008 308 turbo diesel wagon which has recently done 140,000km. Until last 2,000 or so kms, no problems. Car still going extremely well but recently seems to have developed a deep resonant hum, or whine, which is evident at accelerating and decelerating speeds. Sometimes it's quite obvious. Booked into Peugeot agency within the week, but any advance knowledge would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

What transmission? Louder or pitch change on acceleration or deceleration? Coming from front or rear?

Automatic transmission, seems to develop in loudness on acceleration until about 110kph, and also a "winding down" whine on deceleration (bit like a jet engine slowing down but a lot quieter!!) and appears to be coming from rear.

Apparently the noise is from a rear wheel bearing and both are to be replaced with non Peugeot parts later in the week. Thanks everyone.

If the bearing didn't fix it consider the tyres especialy l/h rear it get feathered on the inside from excessive round about's that is what I find with our 307 hdi wagon run hand clockwise around inner edge of l/h rear tyre feeling for a saw tooth effect or heal & toe gives same noise as a bearing rotate tyres to see if noise goes or moves .

Thanks cprrw132; have had bearings replaced and now runs very quietly so problem appears fixed. We did consider tyres as had recently bought two new ones for front and old front moved to rear, but new bearings seems the solution. Thanks anyway.
