I lost believability at the part where he said "Pac Hwy". How you drive along there without seeing a camera every seventeen metres I do not know.

No Just gearbox out. But still not easy, and I assume the six is probably as bad (or worse) that the S16! Not something I look forward to doing again.

Pic shows my S16 engine sans flywheel with the engine still in the car though I just got mine machined and put the original back in.

I like that fine even oil mist spray covering the block, it really helps to preserve the aluminium block underneath in pristine condition. Mine was similarly preserved, must be a French thing?

A work colleague has just bought a GTI-6 here in Melb.

Sounds like an exhaust hole in front muffler/resonator. Also has no indication of timing belt replacement and is at about 170,000km. Front tyres a bit worn, but otherwise in fair condition.

    So....

I assume a timing belt/tensioner/idler replacement is not cheap, but this thread suggests it is likely worth keeping the car alive for a bit longer, rather than just waiting for it to die when the belt goes. Any tips for good/cheap mechanics around the inner East Melbourne suburbs? I could help out, but with four family cars to maintain already, I am a tad reluctant to get involved helping people at work in case I end up with a new full time job. Is the timing belt change straightforward enough? I know the EW10J4, but have no experience of the XU10J4 in the older model.

If the actual change is easy, I could find parts and suggest he gets a competent mechanic to do the actual install.
