Default New 208GTi - the door's just fallen off!

    Hey All,

I've heard stories of this type of thing, but now it's happened to me!

(Naturally I'm a thousand kays and a Bass Strait from home, too!) My wife, sister-in-law and niece all piled in and just as my wife was closing the door, the top hinge came apart.

Have called the magic Peugeot number and a 'technician' will be with me within an hour...

    Cheers,
    Tony.

Update. Just got a call from the guy they're sending (a Marshall's battery guy...). Very friendly and all that, but possibly not in a position to guarantee a quality fix to get me back to Canberra. Will see what happens when he gets here.

In summary - the circlip that holds the pin in the hinge had fallen off at some point and it was today that the pin finally wiggled out under gravity. The 'Peugeot' response wasn't that helpful - though the Marshall guy they sent did what he could, he was well separated from Peugeot and any 'official' response to the problem. As it is, the pin is back in and some tape is wrapped around the shaft to stop it dropping out. This is the solution to get us back to Canberra (from Hobart).

I'll have to take it up with the Canberra dealer when we get home - including rectifying the paint damage that occurred when the door came off.

I've had a lot of cars and it never happened to any one of them. In fact, I can't recall anyone I know having a door fall off. To me it sounds like the whole lot might need a major recall simply on safety grounds.

One would think that the pin would be fitted so it has to be removed in the upwards direction to prevent this kind of thing happening.
    Guess not.

I've never looked at a 208 door hinge before, but is it possible to turn the pin around to prevent this?

This is my 35th car and certainly the first to lose a door (hinge).

A friend of ours did have the entire door fall off his mid-noughties Clio. He rang the dealer and was told "bring it in so we can have a look". His response was "I don't think you understand - THE DOOR'S FALLEN OFF!"

This story was mentioned to me in the context of getting a(nother) French car. I said not to be silly - how likely is it, really, that a door will fall off...

Exactly - the lower hinge does have the pin come in from the top so you do wonder why the top doesn't do the same.

I'm curious now and will bothering friends and family to see what's holding their doors on...

Time to drill a small hole through the pin aligned with the circlip groove and fit a split pin ?

Yet another example of sh!t design.

407 Coupe? (I actually noticed this about 2 weeks ago!) At least mine is only the door stay.

Looks like Peugeot still has the same worker there.

Glad it is only the stay, if the coupe's door fell off it could be catastrophic, as I estimate that each door must weigh 200Kg!

Peugeots aside, the wife's Renault R10 had a front door fall off years ago, no problem she just put the door in the back seat with the kids and brought it home.

I just checked the 306 and it has a similar design but with a bolt. On the bottom hinge the bolt enters from the top, but on the upper hinge it goes in from the bottom.

And yep, you guessed it, the 406 has the same arraangement. On the other hand, this is not something new. On a 504 there isn't enough space to insert the roll pin from the top. Not sure about 505s.

Hi BlackC2, believe it or not my ds3 cabrio drivers side door when i open the door it makes a noise like a stretched panel, the noise does not do it when i open the door from the outside this issue only started about 3 months ago, given that the roads are in some places pot holes, with only 15k driven and its only 15 months old, "dare to be different" Tony

The check strap can make that noise when the rollers and springs in the door go bad.

If the car is still under warranty, it's worth getting it looked at.

As an aircraft engineer it does seem odd to me that they've attached the pins like that - but it certainly makes it easier to install the door with a lifting device so they can clip the pins afterwards. It's all about speed, after all

I took some pics of my driver's door. One in the position I found it and one turned so you can see the clip a little better. I guess if one is particularly fussy about cleaning one could disturb the clip accidentally, but it seems unlikely. Perhaps it was missed on installation?

Additionally, my DS3 driver's door has made that "crack" noise since 6months of age. I must go and check if it's got the same clip arrangement as the 208.

I knew an R8 rally car whose door fell off as they came into a finish control on a rally.
More recently a friend sent an R8 shell over to WA (to Wayne on here) by road freight. It left with four doors and arrived with three!
It all went to god after that anyhow though so probably didn't matter.

Update: Neither the door or the panel damage has been fixed yet. The dealer tells me (when they bother to return my calls or deliver on anything they promise in terms of getting back to me) they need clearance from head office who in turn have, supposedly, said they need clearance from "the factory in France".

Meanwhile the pin is only 90% in it's correct position and gas nothing to stop it falling out other than friction...

    Watch this space...

    Cheers,
    Tony.

My DS3 driver's door has also started making cracking noises as I open it lately - maybe I also need to see what my hinge pin looks like.
Hope Peugeot give you a satisfactory response soon.

Why couldn't you just shut the door and keep on driving? Instead of sitting on the side of the road for over an hour waiting for help surely you could just close it and drive off?

I once had a Reno 10 with a broken top hinge and the door fell off every time it was opened. I just kept it shut and drove it for about 6 months till I could get round to welding it back together.
