    AE Pistons

While pulling down my 504 engine yesterday I noticed that it is fitted with AE pistons. They are extremely strong looking when compared with the standard 504/505 pistons. They are really impressive.

AE has just been bought by Federal Mogul and they may discontinue some lines of products. I hope they keep making 504/505 piston and liner kits.

What advantages do the Mahle ones have over the AE pistons? I've heard of some Mahle 505 pistons cracking, but there may be more than one type. Any piston will crack, if enough pre-ignition occurs, although the AE pistons do look like they would take quite a bit of pinging before they died.

dave to tell you the truth i have not had a problem with ae or mahl, never had one crack under normal circumstances.one split a liner down the side once but it had a head gasket fault and the bore was full of water, locked up on starting, the owner got jumper leads thinking it was a flat battery and jummped buggery out it and bingo cracked to liner.i think its the reputation mahl have and maybe the old if its dearer its gotta be better syndrome.never bothered to measure the two pistons sets because ive never two sets laying around.

    Trivia:
The 404 Injection factory workshop manual mentions that the 404 KF2 has KS (Kolben Schmidt) pistons.
