Default how do you tune a 504 2 liter petrol engine for performance?

I am currently rebuilding a 504 pick up (body on wheels) I already have the engine. Its a 2 liter, petrol-fed motor with old plenum type manifold. Its rusted out in and out but the cylinder head and block are intact. I am planning to strip out the motor-separate the block and head for reconditioning, clean out the insides from the rust. I am more interested in the performance aspects. How do you modify the engine components for better performance in terms of power? I am a die hard Peugeot freak and would want to make a point to my peers that "old is better".

Follow McBean's recipe for the head, skim 1 mm to raise compression, get some 2.5 mm dome 505 pistons, a Wade 112 cam, or better yet a Camtech 622-107, a 1 mm copper gasket from Ridgecrest (all three are Aussie companies), 4-2-1 extractors (38 mm to 42 mm) and a 55 mm exhaust pipe and you will be all set. If you manage to buy a Ti head and get twin Webers in it, so much the better, but they can be quite thirsty and an overkill for a pick up.
