    Default 505 sti knocking/ticking

Hi guys. Im new to this forum and Im from tassie.

Just recently purchased a 505 sti for $300, which i thought was a win!

It has a knocking sound upon acceleration, on idle it sounds completely fine! My thought was it could possibly be a manifold leak? Im quite new to working on engines but im really keen to get this thing running nicely! Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks guys!

Could be piston slap .A manifold leak would be evident at idle too

Suggest you check your ignition timing.
If the ignition was set up [advanced] to take advantage of anti-knock 95 or 98 octane, and you use 91, it will knock.

Incorrect timing would cause a fast pinging sound .This could also be caused by fuel that has been in the tank for a very long time and has gone off.

Its quite a loud knocking/slapping. Not your usual pinging sound. But it would definitely have old fuel in it, and it also sounds a bit like a boxer engine. I've got a thermo time switch on its way from LA at the moment to fix a cold start issue.

With an ir temp gun aimed at the zorst manifold, it is not hard to work out which cyl had a misfire ( if that is the issue)

The problem with the cold start on that car is the cold start injector. Easy fixed, I've got one if you need it.

It's defiantly running on 3, that car has had a recent history of electrical problems in the dissy and ignition area so thats worth checking. Again happy to help if need be, I've fixed my fair share of them.

I was going to get that car, but really didn't need another one in my life

    Cheers

Rightio so I've replaced all of the spark plugs and bang. We have 4 cylinders...

One of the plugs wasnt firing what so ever. Seems to be starting completely fine now also. Very happy chappy!
