    Default 404 utes

I've admired these for decades but gawd they are thin on the ground in this Wide Brown Land.

Did we get any or did they all go to the Middle East & get blown up?

Yeah, I get the drift. 40+ years of tinkering/interest in old cars & I've seen one for sale & one on the road!

Dave! Are you REALLY in Bella Roma!?

We migrated out in 1953here in 1953 & can still recite our old address (I wasn't allowed out until I knew it):

Via Delle Scipione numero due cento sesante tre, terzo piano It's still there as of 2004.

There's the odd one around. Here's one I spotted at the 2012 Grand Display of French Cars in Brisbane

Coffs Harbour may be the capital - I have 1, know of another and believe there is a 3rd. There is another goer on the Central Coast as well as 1 in Grenfell. Somewhere I have the contact for the resto ute in Sydney, if you need it; from the photos it was a spare no expense project.

I know of at least 4 404 utes in Hobart, and one on the north-west coast of Tassie. The one at my place (in the background) is shortly going to Melbourne.

2 of these utes are pristine.

I believe Rod Slater's former Sth Perth Eurocars had one as a shop run-about and rally barge.
One in Kalgoorlie [70's] we serviced [Golden Fleece]. Belonged to a prospector not long out from ZA. Aussie built with ribbed sides.

From memory, not much leg room if you're tall and no fore/aft adjustment of seats.

There is a 404 ute at West Car Sales in Bundaberg

    (07) 4152 7355

They are the local Peugeot dealership and have a few old specimens from Variety bashes out the back.

Link below to my photo of it.

I acquired a '70 404 Ute a little while ago, I've wanted one for years. It's not without rust, but I've taken on projects a lot worse before.

And no, there isn't a lot of room in the front of one, especially for someone as tall as I am!

The African 404 ute is a legend - known from its work as a taxi-brousse - the African bush taxi - only a special few can own one. Especially with a floor shift and 1796cc motor as standard. The Aussie utes only have short back and sides ... limp.

Sure are. I've seen them and 504s deep in the Sahara. Wonderful vehicles. They really got a lot right with that simple engineering.

Has anyone sourced orig style bows/framework for a canopy?
