    Icon11 505GTi Wagon gearbox

We have a 1990 505 GTi wagon with damaged reverse gear. Opened it up to swap some parts and discovered the housing is cracked when it looks like cogs have jammed and forced the shaft to move sideways. The box has a significant brace between the bell housing and the gearbox.
Does any one have a good wagon box?
Can a sedan box, without the brace, be put into a wagon - given that the car is to be used for dirt roads?
Can the housing be welded? By who??

    Thanks

    Hi Glenn,

Sounds nasty, I believe the brace is unnecessary, I had the same question a couple of years ago. I have had a couple of S2 GTi wagons, changed gearboxes twice, and was assured that it was fine without, and so it proved to be. I don't know that it's peculiar to the wagon, or if it was just a phase thing that was done away with in time. I believe the sedans came with the brace too, at one point, but I could be wrong. The important thing is, a BA 7/5 from a sedan can definitely go straight into the wagon, brace or no brace.

The brace is to do with crash protection, in case of a forward impact the bell housing breaks without it and the engine moves through the firewall. It was added to meet European safety requirements in the late 80s.

The sedan gearbox will fit and work fine.

If you need a spare housing, I have a complete BA7/5 gearbox minus the broken input shaft gear. Where abouts are you located?
